🌍🌱 BORN PROJECT IN THE SPOTLIGHT!

Taking research beyond the lab and sharing ideas with the scientific community! 🔬🌍

We are proud to share that Agnieszka Kuc, a student at Politechnika Poznańska and researcher in the BORN project, presented research related to the project at the international conference Sustainable Waste Management in Materials Science, held on 21–23 September 2026 at Politechnika Poznańska, Wydział Inżynierii Mechanicznej - Politechnika Poznańska, Poznań, Poland.

The conference brought together researchers and experts to exchange knowledge, share innovative ideas, and explore new perspectives on sustainable materials and waste management. It was a great opportunity to showcase BORN research and contribute to the scientific discussion in this important field. 🌱♻️

👏 A special thank you to the outstanding Organising Committee, led by Dr. Eng. Aleksander Hejna and Assoc. Prof. Mateusz Barczewski, DSc, Eng., for the excellent organisation and for creating such a valuable platform for scientific exchange!

🎓 Congratulations to Agnieszka Kuc on presenting the project's work and actively contributing to BORN's research activities!

🌱 What happens to PLA-based materials when they reach the soil?

Within the BORN - EIC Pathfinder project, the Polymer Technology Group at KTH Royal Institute of Technology investigates the biodegradation of PLA-based materials under soil conditions.

Using respirometric monitoring and material characterization, the research helps assess their biodegradation behaviour and supports the development of more sustainable end-of-life solutions.

🔬 BORN – EIC Pathfinder | Annual Meeting 2026

📍 Poznań, Poland | 24–25 September

Two inspiring days of scientific exchange, collaboration and strategic planning at the BORN – EIC Pathfinder project annual meeting in Poznań! 🇵🇱

The meeting brought together the BORN consortium to review our scientific and technological progress, discuss key challenges and define the next steps towards an ambitious goal:

🌱 Developing a biobased, biodegradable and reusable thermal-resistant food packaging solution.

BORN addresses a critical challenge at the intersection of advanced materials, Safe and Sustainable by Design, food packaging and circularity: how can we move beyond conventional fossil-based and single-use food packaging while maintaining the thermal resistance and functional performance needed for real-world applications?

Achieving this ambition requires a high-risk, multidisciplinary approach, combining fundamental research and technological development to rethink how food packaging materials are designed, processed, used and ultimately reintegrated into more sustainable material cycles.

🤝 Strengthening synergies across the EIC Portfolio

The meeting also provided a valuable opportunity for three delegates from the BIO4PAK project to join the discussions, fostering technological synergies and knowledge exchange within the EIC Portfolio.

Connecting complementary expertise across EIC-funded projects can help identify shared challenges, explore new opportunities for collaboration and contribute to accelerating the development of future sustainable solutions. 🌍

The discussions in Poznań were an important opportunity to connect the different scientific and technological strands of BORN, evaluate progress, identify the challenges ahead and strengthen our collaborative pathway towards the envisioned breakthrough.

🚀 As an EIC Pathfinder project, BORN is driven by the ambition to go beyond incremental improvements and explore a new technological paradigm for sustainable food packaging.

From breakthrough materials to a more sustainable packaging future: the BORN journey continues! 🌱

🌱 One year of BORN – and we’re just getting started! 🚀

One year ago, the BORN – EIC Pathfinder project began its journey towards a more sustainable future for food packaging.

Since then, we’ve been working together to develop biobased, biodegradable and thermally resistant materials that could help move packaging beyond fossil-based plastics. 🌍

✨ A few highlights from our first year:

🔬 New advances in sustainable polymer materials
♻️ Progress towards biodegradation and circular solutions
📦 Launch of BORN-TIPTOP, exploring high-barrier paper-based food packaging
🌍 BORN research shared at conferences across Europe
🤝 Stronger collaboration within the EIC Circular Bioplastics Portfolio

And this is only the beginning!

🚀 The next chapter will focus on further developing and validating our materials and bringing BORN closer to potential real-world applications.

🚀 What if we could make bioplastics stronger, more heat-resistant, and better suited for the packaging of tomorrow?

That’s exactly the kind of challenge the BORN – EIC Pathfinder project is tackling! 🌱🔬

At the XXVI Conference of AIM – Associazione Italiana di Scienza e Tecnologia delle Macromolecole in Torino, Alessandra Longo presented BORN’s latest research results: “Tuning PLLA Crystallization Kinetics via Reactive Extrusion Branching Strategies”

The research, jointly carried out at CNR Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) and Politechnika Poznańska, shows how long-chain branching can enhance PLLA crystal nucleation, opening up promising possibilities for overcoming some of the key limitations of PLLA, including slow crystallization and poor thermal resistance.

🌍 Why does this matter?

Better-performing PLLA could contribute to the development of high-performance, thermal-resistant bioplastics for reusable and biodegradable food packaging, helping accelerate the transition toward more sustainable and circular materials.

💡 From polymer science to real-world impact: this is innovation for a more circular future.

🚀 A first major milestone for BORN!

We’re excited to announce the first scientific publication from the BORN – EIC Pathfinder project, jointly authored by researchers from CNR Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche and KTH Royal Institute of Technology 🎉

🧪 The research addresses a key challenge in using PLLA, a bio-based polymer, by showing how its crystallization can be significantly accelerated while achieving higher crystallinity.

🌱 Why is this important?
These results can help pave the way for faster processing and improved thermal performance of bio-based materials — bringing us one step closer to more sustainable, high-performance packaging solutions.

🔬 This is only the beginning of the BORN journey!
