An Update on OpticsRE

We know many of you have experienced issues with the OpticsRE platform over the past several months, including intermittent connectivity, delayed data reporting, and gaps in historical system data. We understand how important reliable system monitoring is, and we appreciate your patience while we've worked to address these challenges.

We're pleased to share that a significant update is on the way.

Our engineering team has been working diligently on a long-term solution that includes both hardware and software improvements designed to enhance the overall performance and reliability of the platform.

Because these improvements require updates to both the underlying infrastructure and the live service, the rollout will take place in phases over the coming weeks. This approach allows us to carefully implement, monitor, and validate each stage of the update to help ensure a successful transition.

We'll continue to keep you informed as the rollout progresses and will share additional updates along the way.

PUERTO RICO, YOUR SHADOW ALMOST DISAPPEARED! ☀️😮

On July 31, the Sun reached its highest point above western Puerto Rico. Astronomy tables round the moment to 12:34 p.m., when the Sun was an extraordinary 89.9° above the horizon—almost perfectly overhead.

Look closely at these four photos of the same glass, taken from the south, west, north, and east. The shadow is almost impossible to find because the sunlight was falling nearly vertically.

It will happen again TODAY! See it for yourself!

At approximately 12:34 p.m. today, August 1, place a glass, bottle, can, broomstick or other vertical object on a flat surface. The Sun will still reach about 89.9° again, producing an extremely short shadow. Start observing around 12:32 p.m. and continue until 12:37 p.m. to capture the best moment.

Take pictures from all four sides and post your results. Can you find the shadow?

Why this doesn't happen in mainland US?

This only happnes in the tropics: between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Because Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Hawaii lie between those two tropics, the sun reaches the zenith over their latitude twice each year: once traveling north and once returning south.

Hawaii is the only U.S. state where the Sun can pass directly overhead. Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa also experience it because they are tropical U.S. jurisdictions. The continental United States lies north of the Tropic of Cancer, so the Sun can never reach the zenith there.

⚠️ Never look directly at the Sun. Observe the object and its shadow—not the Sun itself.

2. No nos vimos afectados por la falta de servicio de Luma, ya sea por mejoras planificadas o por averías en el sistema de generación o de transmisión y distribución. Lamentablemente, miles de nuestros hermanos y hermanas se han visto afectados por la falta del servicio recientemente.
