Myth: No Sun = No Solar Power ❌
Fact: Solar Panels work with daylight, not heat ✅
The fact is, when the sky is cloudy, light still reaches the solar panels; this is called diffuse irradiation. Solar panels generate less electricity when it is cloudy, but they still generate some. While significantly more is produced on sunny days, bad weather does not stop generation entirely.

Heat reduces the panel's electrical voltage. Since Power = Voltage × Current, cooler temperatures allow solar panels to produce more electricity. That’s why product quality matters! Top-tier products withstand extreme heat better and limit these losses.

Cloudy conditions spread sunlight more evenly, which smooths out power production. The outcome is fewer extreme peaks and drops, leading to less thermal and electrical stress on solar system components. High-quality products can handle peaks and drops without issues, but it’s still beneficial to give the equipment some rest once in a while.

To bridge a power outage, you need a backup system with batteries and an inverter that can operate in ‘island mode’. In this configuration, the system can disconnect itself from the grid and use the stored energy to power the household. However, such systems are more complex and require careful planning and installation.

Solar panels are cleaned naturally with rain if the panels are installed with a tilt of at least 15° to 35° — optimal cleaning conditions. This doesn’t replace regular maintenance, but it helps, preparing the system for Portugal’s nearly 300 sunny days.

Be aware. Unfortunately a lot of lies go around in Solar-world these days.

Please do your research before ordering your solar system!

The most encountered irregularities are:

1. “We will help you with government subsidies”
- There are no subsidies for Solar Panels anymore in 2025 and as it looks now, everything points in the direction that IVA might go to 23% from the 1st of July.

2 “We are market leader, leading company with x-years of experience”
- A simple NIF or NIPC search of a company will reveal how long one truly exists. Don’t let 100+ reviews fool you if a company only exist less then a year.

3 “Our team are experts”
- Most new companies work only with subcontractors. When problems happen later or issues occur, you will find yourself bouncing between the company that sold you the equipment, and the hired installer. And this is “if” the phone is still answered.

4 “Our product makes you independent, also, when the grid fails”.
- Nice quote and easy said. The reality is that these systems are most of the times way smaller than your grid supplied power. That means you will drop to the power of your system. Normally, only 30%-50% of your contacted power. There are many factors in play to calculate this. Next to the complexity of those installations, do a good research to see if you indeed get what is promised.

We also see a lot of Huawei promotions these days. The reliability of Huawei is still up for discussion and please do your research if you are interested in these systems.
There are votes to ban Huawei from the 5G network in alot of EU countries along with Portugal. Since this equipment works on WiFi, this might become a future challenge when Portugals ISP’s decide or be forced to ban Huawei from their network.

Solar panels and major power outages

After the major blackout last week at the end of April in Portugal, we received calls from many customers who did not understand that despite their solar panels and solar energy systems with or without batteries, the power still went out.

Why did that happen?

During the recent large-scale power outage in Portugal and Spain, many households with solar panels were faced with an unpleasant surprise: despite their investment in solar panels and solar energy, they were still without power. This raises questions about the effectiveness of standard solar panel systems during such emergencies. Many people appear to be ill-informed about the importance of an additional battery system, which can be essential in these types of situations to keep the power supply in the home up and running.

In Portugal, most private solar panel systems are connected to the public electricity grid, a so-called ‘on-grid’ or ‘grid-parallel’ configuration. These systems are designed to supply energy as long as the grid is operational. In the event of a power outage, the system automatically shuts down, a safety measure that prevents electricity from flowing back into the grid, which can be dangerous for technicians working on the restoration.
The key component in this process is the inverter, which converts the DC power generated by the solar panels into AC power for domestic use. When a voltage drop on the grid is detected, the inverter shuts down, causing the entire system to stop functioning. This means that even on a sunny day, without a connection to the grid, the solar power generated cannot be used.

One possible solution is to use a ‘back-up’ system with batteries and an inverter that can operate in ‘island mode’. In this configuration, the system can disconnect itself from the grid and use the stored energy to power the household. However, such systems are more complex and expensive, and require careful planning and installation.

The recent power outage has shown that many households with solar panels are not prepared for such situations. It highlights the need for better education about the limitations of standard solar panel systems and the possibilities for back-up solutions. For those who want to be truly independent from the grid, it is essential to invest in systems that are designed to function autonomously during power outages.
