Still, you need to know what torque passes through it - to size, understand a failure, and choose a component.

Indirect estimation is the approach. For the useful torque, start with the electrical power the motor draws and the line speed - power divided by angular velocity gives the torque.

For a looping friction torque, you start from the clamping force and the friction coefficient. Each path gives a grounded value, from quantities measured or know, without touching the shaft.

Of course it is not as exact or calibrated as a strain gauge, but it is enough to decide with a basis, without relegating to guessing. This is the clear differentiation between engineering and a random shot.

Welded: rigid, cheap in material, but heavy and hard to modify once finalized (can be integrated into machining if needed).

Bolted: modular, demountable for transport, but needs care with tolerances and is one more task for commissioning.

Aluminium profile: light and quick to assemble, more expensive in material, but the extra can be recovered in labout and lead time.


The choice isn't made by habit or whichever is best known, but from the load the structure carries, how much it may need to be changed/modules added, and the weight that matters for transport, as well as the budget. Besides this, there may be different sections of the same machine done in different types of structures.


Deciding the construction type must always come from the right analysis and criteria, as part of the design process - the baseline of Auvyar's engineering.

Five countries - China, Japan, USA, South Korea and Germany concentrate the large majority of installation. Germany is the only European near the top, even so far below Asia.

Portugal installed 758 robots that year, with density in the automotive industry at 489 robots per 10,000 workers, against roughly 1,000 in Spain and France, and around 1,500 in Japan, the US and Germany.

The distance from the Iberian Peninsula to the automation frontier is large. For anyone producing in Portugal, two main factors arise: a real competitive gap, and room to automate that other countries are already using up. Moreover, 57% of 2024 installations were in general industry, and not automotive.

It is clear: the missing automation is not on the automotive industry, but in the factories that don't have their first dedicated machine yet.

That reading - where automation pays off, and where it hasn't arrived - is what we bring to every project.

A traction drive for two driven rollers at the same rotation keeps snapping, and the transmission shaft breaks. Your maintenance teams weld it, and it breaks again.

When a part fails at the same spot even after it's been replaced, the most likely cause is not the part, but rather the operation, the part dimensioning, or the new operating conditions that develop over time.

Two rollers whose diameters wear differently, but are forced to turn at the same speed, end up creating a conflict: each roller would run at a different rate, and since they can't, the difference closes into a torque that circulates permanently through the transmission. That torque loads the shafts continuously, regardless of the useful traction the machine is doing. The hand weld was simply the weakest link, where the stress showed up first.

Endlessly replacing the part that breaks treats only the symptom. Understanding why it breaks, and attacking the cause, is the way to avoid weekly repairs or a solution that stays for years.

This reasoning, working back from the component that fails, to the mechanism that makes it fail, is what we run before drawing any solution.
