🔹 Where is Waterproofing Required? — Critical Building Areas

Waterproofing හරියට කරන්නනම්
පළමුව හරියට identify කර ගත යුතුයි.
👉 ජලය දිගටම එන / රැඳෙන ප්‍රදේශ.
ඒවායින් වඩාත් වැදගත් areas:

🚿 Toilets & Wet Areas
(shower areas, floor & wall junctions)
🧱 Roof Slabs & Terraces
(ponding water / no slope areas)
🛗 Lift Pits
(ground water seepage risk)
🧯 Overhead & Underground Water Tanks
🌧 Parapet Walls & Roof Edges
🏢 Podium Slabs / Car Parks
🧱 Retaining Walls & Basements
🛁 Balconies & Wash Areas

Engineering Note:
Every area requires a different waterproofing system —
✔ One material cannot solve all conditions.

Correct area identification = 50% of waterproofing success.

🎯 Many waterproofing jobs fail — not because of the product…
👉 but because the wrong area + wrong system is selected.
Different locations = different exposure conditions
💧 moisture | 🌧 rain | 🧱 soil pressure | 🧫 chemical exposure

In the next post we’ll discuss 👇
Types of Waterproofing Systems & Where to Use Them

🔹 WATERPROOFING — Why Most Buildings Fail?

Waterproofing කියන්නේ
ඉදිකිරීමක structure එකට ජලආසාදනය (water pe*******on)
ඇතුල් වීම වැළැක්වීම.

ඔයාට වැඩියෙන්ම මුණ ගැහෙන ප්‍රතිවිපාක:

🧱 Wall Dampness / Paint Peeling
🦠 Mold & Fungus Smell
⚡ Electrical Safety Risk
💰 High Repair Cost
🏚 Reduced Structural Durability

Engineering Insight:
Most waterproofing failures happen due to:
❌ Wrong material selection
❌ Poor surface preparation
❌ No slope / poor drainage
❌ Insufficient coating thickness
❌ No protection screed / damage after application

✔ Waterproofing is NOT just a coating
👉 It is a system + workmanship + inspection

“Correct waterproofing saves the building —
Wrong waterproofing saves only the contractor.”

COVERALL — PPE Clothing
A professional doesn’t walk onto a worksite unprotected.
The coverall provides full-body protection against dust, heat, sparks and abrasions.

Asphalt Road Layers Explained (From Bottom to Top)

An asphalt road is not just a single layer of asphalt. It is a multi-layer system, where each layer has a specific function. Proper layer construction ensures strength, durability, and long service life of the road.

---

1️⃣ Subgrade

What it is: Natural soil prepared to support the road structure.

Purpose:

Acts as the foundation of the road

Transfers traffic loads to the ground

Key Points:

Must be well compacted

Weak subgrade = early road failure

---

2️⃣ Sub-base Layer

What it is: A layer of granular material placed above the subgrade.

Purpose:

Improves load distribution

Provides drainage

Protects subgrade from moisture

Common Materials:

Crushed aggregate

Gravel

---

3️⃣ Base Course

What it is: The main load-bearing layer of the pavement.

Purpose:

Takes most of the traffic load

Provides structural strength

Key Points:

Requires good compaction

Often treated with Prime Coat before asphalt layers

---

4️⃣ Binder Course

What it is: An intermediate asphalt layer between base and surface.

Purpose:

Adds strength and stiffness

Distributes traffic stress evenly

Characteristics:

Larger aggregates

Higher thickness than wearing course

---

5️⃣ Wearing Course (Surface Course)

What it is: The top visible asphalt layer.

Purpose:

Provides smooth riding surface

Skid resistance

Protects lower layers from water and traffic

Key Points:

Uses high-quality aggregates

Requires good finishing and compaction

---

Simple Layer Order (Bottom → Top)

Subgrade → Sub-base → Base Course → Binder Course → Wearing Course

---

Why Proper Layering Matters

Prevents premature failures (cracks, potholes)

Improves road life

Reduces maintenance cost

---

Summary

A durable asphalt road depends on proper design, material selection, and construction of each layer. Ignoring any single layer can significantly reduce pavement performance.

Strong layers = Strong roads 🛣️
