If you've just gotten the keys to your new place or just looking to spruce up your kitchen, you're at the right place!!!
Today, you'll learn about a few things:
- Differences between renovating an existing Kitchen vs. a new kitchen.
- Cabinet/Refrigerator curbs. Need or no need?
- Tops. Tile/Quartz/Natural Stones/Compact
- Backsplash. Tile/Glass/Quartz
- Electrical?
So, lets start with the tasty stuff.
a. Cost. Resale homes and new condos often comes fitted with existing cabinetry. To replace them means you'll have to fork out additional costs to hack away the existing ones.
b. Time. Having to hack will mean that it will take up some time. After the removal of the existing cabinetry, your ID/Contractor might also notice degrading that happens behind the carpentry. So those will need to be fixed as well.
c. Gas line. If the design of your kitchen situates your gas stove to a completely different area, then we will have to call in the gas people to shift those for you.
*remember, no matter how experienced your contractor is, touching of the gas line is strictly for Singapores appointed gas workers.*
Moving on... The answer is absolutely, YES! These bases are usually 50-70mm in height.
a. Mortar bases are made to be flushed flat to act as solid base for your carpentry to sit on. So, it will act as a good foundation for your carpentry.
b. Washing of your kitchen. If you do wash your kitchen frequently (meaning you hose down and flood to wash), then you will tend to benefit more from this. It will prevent the bottom portion of your carpentry from being completely soaked in water constantly.
c. Toe kick. It creates a gap for your toes to slot into when you are standing flush to your carpentry whilst cooking/washing! It WILL help to eliminate all those nasty pains your get from kicking the bottom of the carpentry.
Next. Well, this will stem from many points. It could be design, practicality, durability etc.
a. Quartz. Our trusty Quartz. Looks good, sturdy, easy to clean & price is good too! So we do recommend this if you are a heavy kitchen user.
b. Sintered stone. Similar to Quartz, sintered stones are made of Quartz stones composite with other materials. The function of it is similar to Quartz. Additional point to note is that Sintered stones are a great application for outdoors as it is UV resistant. Hence, you won't find much discolouration when exposed to prolonged sunlight.
c. Compact/Kompact tops. They are a resin + paper composite. Looks really sleek and comes in many different designs. You can even get them to engrave patterns! Should you want a hidden sink, they are able to use the same material to do a cutout cover for you! However, Compact/Kompact are only heat resistant and not heat proof. So when exposed to VERY hot touches, it will pop. Also, its pretty prone to chips and scuffs. When you drop something of sharp edge on it, it might not withstand the impact.
d. Granite/Natural Stones. These are natural stones literally harvested from the natural elements, cut and polished for you to use. So, they are porous and will require a bit more maintenance. Also, they tend to soak up stains pretty well if not cleaned immediately. Because they are natural, prices are higher compared to the 2 afore mentioned. But of course, you'll get bragging rights when you take people around your house for a tour! ๐
Okok. Hope the article is helpful thus far!
Right... commercial break over.
Lets move on to So before you decide on one, you need to ask yourself a few questions. Am I a heavy cook? Do I want the ease of cleaning? Can I get the best of both?? Whatโs my budget?
a. Tempered glass. Clean look. Comes is various colour options. Suction cup items friendly. Easy to clean & affordable. However, it might crack or break upon hard impact.
b. Tiles. Very beautiful design option. With good care, it will last you a very long tome. Some tiles are porous. So, do check with your ID/Contractor before installation. Porous tiles will stain over time. In addition, you will have to re-grout your back splash once every few years as grout lines will tend to degrade. Remember, you dont have to tile the whole wall! Just let your ID/Contractor know to tile the backsplash area. They'll know what to do!
c. Continuation of your table top quartz or stones as backsplash. This is can bring about a very "attas" feel to your kitchen. Its also a great idea if you want the look to be consistent. These stones are made to last, but you do need to take good care of them. So cleaning after every cook is ideal. Cost is also on the higher end of the spectrum. So, if you have the budget for it, we dont see why not!
In this modern day and age, we tend to have more and more appliances to help make our daily tasks easier. Electircal works starts during the foundation phase of your renovation. So, remember to tie down all your electrical points with your ID/Contractor so all the points can be concealed very nicely and accessible to your specs.
