This episode was originally recorded and uploaded on July 15th, 2022, as part of my previous podcast, "About Nothing." I'm re-uploading it now because of the richness and relevance of the content. I believe it will resonate with my new audience and subscribers who have joined since then.

In this episode, I sit down with Jammie Stark, a woman whose life journey has been extraordinary. Originally from Idaho, Jammie shares her story of growing up in a turbulent environment in California, where she was surrounded by drugs, gangs, and instability. She opens up about her struggles during her teenage years, including dropping out of high school and getting involved with the wrong crowd.

Jammie recounts the pivotal moment when her life took a dramatic turn after an unexpected encounter with faith. She describes how visiting a church in Redding, California, changed everything and set her toward healing and purpose. Now living in South Sudan since 2013, Jamie talks about her work to restore, equip, and empower the youth in practical and spiritual ways.

Join us as we explore Jamie’s incredible transformation, her deep love for South Sudan, and how she and her family have embraced a life of service, driven by faith and a desire to make a lasting impact in their community. This is a story of hope, resilience, and the power of redemption. Don't miss it!

The RecentPast with Nicky Prince

Nicky Prince, also known as Siliman Musa Dima, is a renowned South Sudanese singer and songwriter. He grew up in refugee camps in northern Uganda, facing significant educational challenges due to frequent relocations and financial issues. Despite these obstacles, he excelled academically and found solace in music, initially singing to comfort his mother. He formed the group Blue Culture and later Hard Life Preachers in Khartoum, recording songs with downloaded beats. Upon returning to South Sudan, he co-founded Hard Life Avenue with Murye Alex AKA Mantani , focusing on music that reflected resilience and shared struggles.

Their debut album, "Lost Culture" (2012), eventually gained popularity, especially in Yei, and later throughout South Sudan. Collaborations with Producer Linus, who joined the band, led to several hits, solidifying their status in the South Sudanese music scene and prompting a name change to Hard Life Avenue Stars. Their song "Yau De" achieved widespread acclaim. Nicky Prince values authenticity and simplicity, avoiding comparisons with international artists to maintain a unique identity.

The tragic loss of Mantani in an accident in 2021 deeply impacted Nicky Prince and Linus. Despite their grief, they continued to honor Mantani's legacy through their music. Nicky also discusses the challenges of balancing his music career, personal life, and day job, acknowledging his wife's support and his colleagues' eventual recognition of his musical success.

Ter Manyang was born in Ayod, Jonglei State. Initially guided by his soldier father, he began schooling but later dropped out to stay in the village with cattle. He believed it was essential to acquire life skills before returning to academics. After some years, Ter resumed his education and moved to Khartoum for primary school. He later relocated to Uganda, where he completed his high school education and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration and Management with a major in good governance and human rights from Cavendish University. Ter Manyang is pursuing a Master of Arts in Transformational Leadership, specialising in Gender Studies and Women's Rights at the University of Juba.

Ter is passionate about human rights and civic space in South Sudan, which led him to establish the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) in 2013. CPA advocates for human rights, transitional justice, institutional reforms, gender justice, and citizen participation in governance and decision-making processes.

He is a vocal critic of policies he views as undemocratic and restrictive of the civic space. This stance has put him at odds with various law enforcement actors, resulting in his restriction a few times. Ter claims his work has put him under constant threats by some of these actors and made his job difficult. Actions which he says do not deter him. He is a prominent voice in the media and other public platforms, commenting on the peace agreement, civic participation, and freedom of expression.

In 2023, the South Sudan Human Rights Defenders Network (SSHRDN) awarded Ter Manyang the Human Rights Winner Award for the Greater Upper Nile Region of South Sudan.
