Community Forum: Online Safety and Gendered Dimensions of Digital Hate Speech in South Sudan.

South Sudan’s rapid expansion of mobile internet and social media has opened new avenues for public engagement, but it has also intensified online harms, especially against women and girls.

Female journalists, activists, human rights defenders, and everyday users increasingly face gendered hate speech, harassment, AI-driven mis/disinformation, and sexualised digital abuse. These attacks reinforce offline inequalities and silence women’s voices in civic and political spaces.

To respond to this growing problem, Digital Rights Frontlines, in collaboration with Journalists for Human Rights, is convening a community forum that brings together key stakeholders to examine emerging online threats, share lived experiences, and co-create strategies for safer, more inclusive digital environments.

Participants are required to register in order to be able to attend the event; however, only those in Juba will be able to attend because it will be an in-person event.

Explainer: South Sudan’s debt burden and sovereign vulnerability.

The Republic of South Sudan, as of October 2025, continues to face a critical sovereign debt crisis, characterised by extreme vulnerability and complex legal threats.

The nation is officially classified by the joint World Bank/IMF Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) in 2021 as being at a High Risk of External and Overall Public Debt Distress.

The official macroeconomic projections estimate the debt-to-GDP ratio at approximately 58 percent of GDP for the 2024/2025 fiscal year, signalling large vulnerabilities.

Ongoing armed conflict, already costing lives, property, and livelihoods, has created fertile ground for the rapid spread of misinformation and hate speech.

Political actors, both within South Sudan and in the diaspora, use social media to advance divisive narratives, threatening social cohesion, peacebuilding and individual well-being.

To counter this, JHR, in partnership with Digital Rights Frontline (DRF) and youth-led collectives Ana Taban and Advance Youth Radio, launched a campaign titled “Kefaya Misinformation” (Enough Misinformation).

The campaign promotes a more resilient information ecosystem that supports peacebuilding and democratic processes.
