Mogok, Myanmar, 2016.

One has to stay focused in the fast paced markets in Mogok. A dazzling array of stones appears here, including the rubies, sapphires, and spinels that have made this valley one of the world’s most famous gem sources.

While visiting with our friends at Veerasak Gems, we were reminded just how hectic the trading can be. Vendors approach from every direction, each hoping for a moment to display their stones. Prices are called out, parcels slide across the tables, and buyers try to assess quality and value in a matter of minutes.

Lighting is crucial. Stones are examined in both sunlight and torchlight, often displayed on brass plates whose warm color makes rubies appear at their best. The practice is so ingrained that some buyers even carry their own brass plates to evaluate stones the way they are accustomed.

But even in a market so close to the mines, caution is essential. Treated stones, imitations, and synthetics can all make an appearance, and purchases here rarely come with a return policy.

A vintage Cartier sapphire and diamond convertible brooch/pendant, currently offered by Sotheby's with a Lotus Gemology report.

Composed of multiple sapphires rather than a single center stone, the piece relies on careful matching to achieve a cohesive color.

At this level, documentation becomes part of the conversation. A gemological report provides an independent record of the stones examined, adding useful context for evaluation.

In the laboratory: UV torch (longwave)

A simple handheld tool, but often more informative than expected. Under longwave ultraviolet light, some gemstones reveal fluorescence. In some cases it's from the host material, other times from features within it.

This can assist in detecting fillers, as in some emeralds, or highlight inclusions such as petroleum in quartz.

Fluorescence alone, however, is not definitive. Its presence, absence, and appearance must be considered in context.

We asked you to guess which of these tourmalines is colored by copper, and the answer is A.

A. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum is a fast and effective way of separating copper-bearing (’cuprian’) and non-cuprian tourmaline. In this blue-green tourmaline, the major chromophore is copper, as shown by the major peak at about 910 nm.

B. This pattern, with a large peak at about 710 nm, shows that this stone is not colored by copper. But if you compare the colors of the two gems (Gem A vs. Gem B), you can see that a virtually identical color is possible without copper. The marketplace pays a far higher price for the cuprian vs. the non-cuprian tourmaline. Why? To paraphrase the Irish rock band U2, the gem market “moves in mysterious ways.”

Of course, a gemstone’s beauty is not defined by its chromophores. Laboratory spectroscopy simply allows us to determine what is responsible for the color.
