Seal Material Selection : NBR vs FKM vs FFKM!
Each elastomer has its own strengths and weaknesses in chemical resistance, temperature tolerance, durability, and cost. Here’s a quick Selection:
.Chemical Resistance: FFKM resists nearly all chemicals; NBR excels with oils but is weak against acids and solvents.
.Heat Tolerance: FFKM and FKM handle high temperatures best; NBR degrades faster under heat.
.Oil/Fuel Resistance: NBR is excellent and economical for oils; FKM is equally great; FFKM works too but is overkill unless needed for harsh conditions.
.Low-Temp Flexibility: NBR stays flexible in cold, while FKM/FFKM become stiffer at low temperatures.
.Longevity (Compression Set): FFKM lasts the longest with minimal compression set; NBR has a shorter service life.
.Permeation/Purity: FFKM has ultra-low gas permeation (best for high-purity needs), whereas NBR allows more v***r outgassing.
Cost: FFKM is by far the priciest; FKM is mid-range; NBR is most affordable.
When to Use What:
✅ Use NBR for oil-based, hydraulic, or fuel systems when budget matters (ideal for ambient to moderately low temps, dynamic seals).
✅ Use FKM for high-temperature or solvent-exposed applications where longer seal life is needed (common in chemical processing, HVAC, automotive).
✅ Use FFKM for extremely aggressive chemicals, steam, or ultra-clean environments (semiconductor, pharma). It’s expensive but minimizes leaks and downtime.
✅ Dynamic/High-Pressure systems: If friction and low permeation are critical, go with FFKM or a specialty-filled FKM. If the system is mostly oil-based with frequent motion, a well-formulated NBR can work cost-effectively.
When choosing a seal material, consider the fluid media, operating temperature range, pressure, whether the seal is dynamic or static, cleanliness requirements, and cost constraints. Choosing the right material prevents leaks and maintenance headaches.
