Why Engineering Changes Should Be Controlled Before PCB Assembly

Recently, we supported a customer with an ESP32-C6-MINI-1 based NPI project through our Turnkey PCB Assembly service.

The first prototype build failed to boot. After reviewing the hardware and design files, the issue was traced to a PCB layout error rather than a manufacturing issue.

After the design was corrected, the second build successfully completed firmware programming and functional testing.

During validation, we also found that one BOM part number did not match the PCB footprint. Fortunately, the issue was identified before production release, avoiding potential rework and schedule delays.

Issues like these are exactly why many OEM teams perform NPI builds before moving into production.

A Working Design Doesn't Always Mean a Production-Ready Design

In many cases, the issue is not the circuit design itself — it's the BOM.

During NPI and production ramp-up, we frequently encounter challenges such as:
