Uganda is richly endowed with many renewable energy resources for energy production and provision of energy services. These resources include biomass (both woody and non-woody), water, sunshine, peat, geothermal and wind. Of all these, water (for large scale hydro power) and biomass are the most significantly utilized and indeed contribute greatly to meeting the energy demands of Uganda’s populati
on. Currently, Uganda has an estimated total electrical power capacity potential of 5,300 MW. Much, however, still needs to be done to realise this potential since majority of available resources remain largely under-utilized. Considering the fact that energy is a critical input and driver of every aspect in the economy, there is a need for improvement in the sector. This is in terms of increased investment, improvement in the regulatory framework and capacity building to fill the capacity gap in the sector which affects quality of service delivery and delays the consolidation of the sector. To support the mitigation process, business associations in the renewable energy and energy efficient (RE&EE) sector initiated the Uganda National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Alliance (UNREEEA) in January 2015. UNREEA aims to;
- identify and disseminate best practices related to market development for renewable energy and energy efficient technologies, and capacity building
- establish and propagate best practices pertaining to capacity building of member organizations
- facilitate fundraising for national and regional activities
- represent member associations at regional and international level
- advise the Ugandan Government, the East African Community and other interested parties on RE&EE issues
- develop an energy sector database for Uganda
- mobilize investment for the sector
- promote business linkages
Our approach
The alliance seeks to unite RE&EE associations in Uganda, under one umbrella organization. Planned activities include market development for member associations, capacity building, standard quality assurance and consumer protection, lobbying for conducive policy and regulatory frameworks and their implementation, awareness raising and information dissemination. These include Biomass Energy Efficient Technologies Association (BEETA), Uganda National Biogas Alliance (UNBA), Hydropower Association of Uganda (HPAU), Energy Efficiency Association of Uganda (EEAU), and Uganda National Renewable Energy Association (UNREA).
