Public vs Private Utilities
Public utilities are infrastructure owned by a company, such as your power, natural gas, telecommunications, water and sewer provider. 811 is a free resource for locating these public utilities. It is always a good idea to call 811 first so that you can identify any public utility that may be near your dig site before you call for private locates. Plan ahead and call 811 a minimum of three days before digging. This will help explain the steps for marking your site, the utilities covered by 811, and provide instructions for checking the status of your locate request.
