Build Retaining Walls the Right Way 🧱🌧️
A retaining wall is not just about holding back soil—it must also safely manage water and hydrostatic pressure. Poor drainage can lead to wall movement, cracking, tilting, and even collapse.
🔹 Key Components of a Proper Retaining Wall
1. Retaining Wall – Concrete block, masonry, or reinforced concrete as designed.
2. Drainage Backfill – Clean, free-draining gravel behind the wall.
3. Filter Fabric (Geotextile) – Helps prevent soil migration into the drainage layer.
4. Perforated Drain Pipe – Collects and carries water away from the wall.
5. Drainage Outlet – Discharges collected water safely to daylight or a stormwater system.
6. Concrete Footing – Provides a stable foundation for the wall.
7. Compacted Soil Backfill – Properly placed and compacted in controlled layers.
📐 Important Design Considerations
• Provide adequate drainage behind the wall.
• Use clean, free-draining aggregate behind the wall.
• Provide filter fabric where required to prevent clogging.
• Ensure the drain pipe has a suitable outlet and slope.
• Compact backfill carefully without overstressing the wall.
• Footing size, reinforcement, embedment and wall thickness must be determined by structural and geotechnical design.
