Burn wood in winter? Your chimney needs one thing every year: a sweep. π₯
Here's why it matters. Every fire leaves a layer of creosote β a sticky, tar-like residue β on the inside of your flue. It's highly flammable and it's the leading cause of chimney fires. As little as a quarter-inch of buildup is enough to be dangerous, and you can't see it from your living room.
The fix is simple and cheap compared to the alternative: one professional sweep + inspection a year, ideally in spring or summer before burning season starts.
Quick check before you light your next fire:
- Swept in the last 12 months?
- Smoke drawing up cleanly, not back into the room?
- Cap and screen intact up top?
If any of those is a "no," get it looked at first.
