Our planet is under threat! Climate sustainability…hazard resilience…energy transition…water security… Geoscientists are uniquely positioned to answer the questions planners, policy makers and the public SHOULD be asking. But are they? Our greatest challenge isn’t our science, it’s ensuring our science is part of the conversation. GSA session T33. Tell me a story! Communication and Outreach in the Geosciences encourages professionals and students to share skills and learn from each other so we can communicate our ideas and passions to the people around us.

Session Description: Effective communicators can inspire students, build new and innovative collaborations, confirm the value of continued investment, and excite the public. This session seeks examples of how people and organizations (i.e. educators, researchers, mappers) are bringing all branches of the geosciences to life for both traditional and unexpected audiences.

Emma Tombaugh (our 2024 Morisawa Awardee) got to spend her summer doing fieldwork along the beautiful Soshone River in NW Wyoming! It mostly involved scrambling up exposures to find fluvial terrace deposits and collecting luminescence samples in tubes or in the dark. She also had the opportunity to present her research at a field conference in the Beartooth Mountains.

Follow along this week as we continue to highlight the achievements of one of our division awardees! If you too would like to be highlighted, dm us photos and captions!

This week we are highlighting Morisawa Awardee Emma Tombaugh! Emma is currently a MS student at Utah State University and uses river terraces to understand rock uplift patterns and causes. Over the next couple of days, we’ll feature posts about Emma, her research work (past and present), and what she does for fun.

If you’d like to be highlighted by QG&G, send us a message with photos and captions.

QG&G (Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology) Division is considering a name change. As our division has evolved and expanded over the years, we are wondering does QG&G best describe who we are and what we do? Is the word Quaternary meaningful to our membership? We would like your feedback.
