Over the last 13 years I’ve forgotten more jobs than I remember, but every now and again one comes along that you know you’ll always remember. This was one of those jobs.
S&S Grain and Trucking operated for 55 years successfully. When my father began farming in 1996 this was the first place we ever sold grain and continued to be a large market for much of our grain up until all farming operations were stopped 30 years later. It was the first place I ever hauled a load in a big truck to, when I was only 16😂, and spent many days unloading trucks and shoveling grain. The founder, Mr. Carlise, was a man who did his part to help others and cared deeply about his customers and community. Before Dad began farming he was struggling to make his way in the trucking business when the engine in his truck went out. Mr. Carlise had a B model Cat that would work but having no money Dad thought it a slim chance of getting it. With no prior relationship developed just a handshake and promise of repayment Mr. Carlise sent Dad home with a new engine for his truck and the means to continue providing for our family. Coincidentally this is the job I was starting when Dad lost his battle with cancer then a few weeks later my Granny Hazel passed as I was finishing it up. So for me I’ll always remember this job and those folks associated with this landmark in the Salters community. Thanks to Andrews Metal Works Inc, Ben Cox Company, R&R METAL Recycling, Cooper’s Country Store and last but not least Mr. Carlise Shirer who was on site daily giving advice on how he built everything and what he would do to make demolition easier.
