Project Preview: Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport

A multimillion-dollar project is underway for a new and improved Spartanburg Downtown Airport. Their TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) tower is one of two communication towers that have been relocated and remodeled. All engineering design is by the US Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration.

-These will be Industrial stairs with bar grating steps and landings, typical two-line railing with landing kick-plates.

- Life at Highlands of the Smokies picks right up where one of the most cherished resorts left off. Every unit offers breathtaking mountain views and modern open floor plans.

- Reese Drafting detailed their concrete-filled pan stairs that feature 12in x 2in tube stringers and a unique handrail return design. The stairs are unique in that they have fully cantilevered landings, in which the majority of the weight of the landing bears on the tube steel beam (green) underneath near the steps. All four stringers project continuously to the end of the landing to support the cantilevered design.

Project Feature: Grand Stair at The Radical

With a unique posh-punk attitude towards hospitality, the Radical is truly one in a million. It’s got all the stuff you expect from a luxury hotel but is completely unexpected when it comes to design, atmosphere, and attitude.

This monumental stair located adjacent to the Main Bar is structured with 12” x 2” tube stringers and precast concrete treads. The railing is made with 1/2” thick x 3” wide tapered steel posts and top rail support with 1/2” round bar infill attached to the outside of the stair, featuring a unique tapered handrail bracket design.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Navy Yard Charleston community restoration project. Navy Storehouse 9 in historic Charleston, South Carolina is one of 6 repurposed Navy buildings from the early 1900's. Our stair is made up of 12x3 inch tube stringers with common pan treads filled with concrete. The 2.5-inch flat bar and wire mesh infill give the railings a contemporary, industrial appearance. This short-turn box-style staircase was a challenging element to detail and we enjoyed every bit of it. Toyota Battery Manufacturing, North Carolina (TBMNC) will be the company's first automotive lithium-ion battery factory worldwide, all produced using 100% renewable energy. Six battery production lines will be available at TBMNC when it goes online in 2025, with two supporting battery electric vehicles and four supporting hybrid electric vehicles. Reese Drafting produced shop and field drawings for over 21,000 feet & 100 tons of stairs and structural stair towers in this project using Tekla Structures 3D modeling software. These industrial-style galvanized 2-line railings on channel grating stairs will undoubtedly last a lifetime. We enjoyed working with the designs from the creative minds at Kajima Building & Design Group, Inc. and coordinating with the outstanding team at Steel-Fab Inc.

FernLeaf's Wilderness Campus houses fifth-grade to high school students and has a stunning view of the Fletcher, North Carolina area. This project has a few standard channel stringers with pan steps filled with concrete, but the twin stairs at the outside deck and the L-shaped lobby stair with 12x2 inch tube stringers raise them above the ground. These stairs include 1.5-inch flat-bar rails with square picket infill throughout, along with a special double handrail made specifically for smaller kids. All credit goes to Rueger Riley, Inc. iley, Inc. architects for their contemporary outdoor design and the talented team at Henard Metal Fabricators for the structural steel on this project.
