History Meets Innovation In Washington: Retrofitting The Western Flyer

The Western Flyer is a 77-foot wooden research vessel built back in 1937 by the Western Boat Building Company in Tacoma, Washington.

Chartered by John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts, the vessel set off for a scientific expedition to the Gulf of California in 1940. The journey was later immortalized in The Log from the Sea of Cortez.

After decades of service and a timeline of neglect, the Western Flyer has been fully retrofitted and repowered with a hybrid propulsion system!

Built by Acti and equipped with an innovative Transfluid hybrid propulsion system, the two vessels operate along the coasts of southern France, accompanying residents and visitors to discover coves, nature reserves, and historic ports.
