What a wonderful experience!
Recently, I was contacted by a young lady named Lindsey, who just graduated from Forsyth County High School. She has been accepted into Georgia Tech's prestigious Architecture program and will begin her first full semester in just a few weeks. Before classes begin, Lindsey is participating in Georgia Tech's Pre-College Summer Program, where one of her assignments was to interview a local architect.
We met at my office and spent about an hour together, and I can honestly say it was an incredible experience.
Lindsey came exceptionally well prepared. She asked thoughtful questions about what it feels like to become a licensed architect, what I find most rewarding about the profession, the challenges architects face during the design process, and how my career has evolved over the years.
I shared that one of the greatest rewards of being an architect is having the opportunity to positively impact our communities by solving design challenges and creating spaces that improve people's lives. There is nothing quite like seeing clients enjoy a space that once existed only as an idea on paper. I also explained that I have the unique privilege of being both a licensed architect and a licensed contractor, allowing me to both design and build my projects.
Throughout our conversation, I could clearly see Lindsey's passion for architecture. Her enthusiasm, curiosity, and eagerness to learn were inspiring, and I have no doubt she will be an outstanding student at Georgia Tech.
Our meeting also benefited me. I shared that I am developing an architecture internship program for local high school students, and Lindsey offered valuable insight into what students hope to learn and what colleges look for during the admissions process. Her feedback will help make the program even stronger.
It truly was a win-win experience.
Lindsey, congratulations on taking your first step toward becoming an architect. I wish you tremendous success at Georgia Tech and look forward to seeing the amazing projects you'll create in the years ahead!
