Chris and I decide to go and see a peice of Georgia African-American Architecture Engineering history. Designed by freed slave and arguably first black architect/engineer in Georgia, the Red Oak Creek Bridge is a rare surviving example of the ingenuity of famed bridge builder Horace King. The main span is 253 feet long and is the state's oldest covered bridge.

Born into slavery in South Carolina in 1807, Horace King was either set free or bought his own freedom. Horace King also designed the spiral staircase in the State Capitol Building in Montgomery, Alabama. The sweeping staircase is an architectural wonder, but King was best known for his bridges. At one time much of the Deep South moved on bridges built by Horace King.

In 2015, featured Horace King and other historical Georgia minority in an exhibit for the AIA National Conferin Atlanta.

We are sad to announce the passing of the son of one our and Principal of J.W. Robinson & Associates, Jeffrey Robinson, AIA, NOMA. He was funeralized this past Saturday at Big Bethel AME church in Atlanta. Jeffrey conducted the oral history interview on behalf of his father Joseph Robinson FAIA for our exhibit back in 2015. He will be dearly missed!

JEFFREY L. ROBINSON, AIA, NOMA was a very warm, welcoming and quite humorous at times. He served as President of JW Robinson & Associates and was past President of NOMAtlanta. Jeffrey has been a longtime supporter of NOMA’s mission. It is with regret that we inform you of his passing on November 30, 2019. He will be missed by the architectural community. He was a good friend. Below is Murray Brothers’ website with pertinent info concerning Jeffrey’s wake and funeral arrangements:
