Athens — we're looking at a wet, stormy weekend, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected Saturday into Sunday.

A few quick things worth checking before it rolls in: make sure your outdoor unit is clear of leaves and debris so it can drain. And if you get flickering lights or a breaker that won't reset during the storm, don't keep forcing it — give us a call.

We also install standby generators, so when the power goes out you're not sitting in the dark. Ask us about sizing one for your home.

Fall thermostat trick: you don't need 72 around the clock. Try 68 when you're home and awake, then drop it a few degrees overnight or while you're at work.

A few degrees makes a real difference on the bill, and you won't notice it under a blanket.

Had a tune-up today where the filter hadn't been changed in over a year. It looked like s**g carpet. The system was basically breathing through a pillow.

Swapped it, cleaned things up, and the homeowner said the house heated up noticeably faster. Not magic. Just airflow.

Check yours. Seriously.

First time you kick the heat on this fall, don't panic if it smells a little... toasty. That's just dust burning off the heat exchanger from months of sitting. Totally normal.

It should fade within an hour or so. If it sticks around, or smells like something electrical burning, shut it down and give us a call — (770) 309-1373.

Ours is that brief window where neither the AC nor the heat is running and the power bill takes a nap.

Almost as good as a clean filter. Almost.

Furnace season is creeping up, and your filter probably hasn't been touched since spring. Go look at it. We'll wait.

If it's gray and fuzzy, swap it out — every 1 to 3 months is the usual rhythm. A clogged filter makes your system work harder, heats worse, and can even freeze up a heat pump.

Ten minutes and a few bucks. Your furnace will thank you.
