The Monarch II was designed for the family who wants the barndominium lifestyle without sacrificing the space and features of a large custom home.

The main floor brings together a massive garage and a thoughtfully designed living space featuring an open kitchen, dining and living area, walk in pantry, laundry room, powder room and private primary suite.

Head upstairs and the possibilities keep going.

Additional bedrooms. Bathrooms. An office. A flex room. Loft space. And an open to below design that gives the home the scale and character we wanted this plan to have.

Then there’s the garage.

At 2,156 square feet, this isn’t a garage added onto the side of a house because we had room left over.

It was part of the plan from the beginning.

And that really sums up why we created this entire series.

We are post frame builders who build barndominiums.

We understand the structure.

We understand the construction process.

And after working with families building these homes, we understand that the reason people choose a barndominium goes far beyond wanting metal siding on their house.

Introducing The Monarch I, one of our favorite examples of why designing a barndominium from the ground up is different from simply modifying a traditional home plan.

This plan was designed around the lifestyle we see so many of our clients looking for.

A dedicated office.

This is why we say these plans were designed to be barndominiums from the beginning.

Our team didn’t approach The Monarch I by asking how we could make a traditional home work with post frame construction.

We approached it as post frame builders and asked:

How do the people building barndominiums actually want to live?

They want a shop or garage that’s actually useful.

And they still want their HOME to feel like a thoughtfully designed custom home.

Next up in our new AZ Barndominium Plan Series: The Summit.

The Summit was designed for someone who wants all the benefits of a thoughtfully designed barndominium without needing a massive garage or an oversized footprint.

🚗 630 sq. ft. garage
🌤️ 744 sq. ft. of porch and patio space

Inside, you’ll find a large open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area, a dedicated office, a walk-in pantry, laundry and mechanical spaces, a private primary suite, and two additional bedrooms on the opposite side of the home.

But the floor plan is only part of the story.

The Summit was designed by post frame builders to be built as a post frame barndominium from day one.

That was important to us when we started developing these plans.

Too often, a barndominium begins as a traditional stick-built house plan that gets modified to fit inside a post frame structure.

We wanted to approach it differently.

We took what our team knows about post frame construction and combined it with what our clients have taught us about how they actually want to live.

Open spaces. Functional storage. Outdoor living. A place to work. A place to gather. And a floor plan that makes sense for everyday life.

The structure and the home were considered together from the beginning.

We’ve been working on something behind the scenes, and we’re finally ready to start showing you what we’ve been up to!

Introducing The Keystone, one of five exclusive barndominium plan sets designed by the team at AZ Custom Buildings.

Here’s what makes these plans different:

We’re post frame builders. So when we designed a collection of barndominiums, we designed them as barndominiums from the very beginning.

We didn’t start with the concept of a traditional stick-built home and try to make it work inside a post frame structure. We started with how post frame buildings are actually built, then combined that knowledge with what we’ve learned from the families who come to us wanting to build a barndo.

The Keystone is all about making the most of every square foot.

Yes. Absolutely.

A 3D rendering and floor plan are great for showing what your home will look like, but they don’t tell everyone how it needs to be built.

Your Construction Documents are the one thing communicating with every. single. person. who touches your project.

From the suppliers bidding your materials, to the subcontractors bidding their respective scopes, to the crews completing the work in the field — everyone should be working from the same set of plans.

And most importantly, those plans communicate your expectations as the client.

They define the details before construction begins:
✓ Foundation and structural requirements
✓ Framing and wall layouts
✓ Roof design and loading requirements
✓ Window and door sizes and locations
✓ Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC layouts
✓ Interior dimensions and elevations
✓ Finish details and material selections
✓ The small details that can easily become big questions in the field
