Is your breaker panel protecting your home?

Common question we get. What does that panel actually do for your safety?

Here’s what you need to know. A modern breaker panel stops overloads and wiring issues before they become a real hazard. Not sure if yours is up to code? Let us help you check it out.

The Mystery of Aluminum Wiring

If you've ever seen "aluminum wiring " mentioned during a home inspection, don't panic. It doesn't automatically mean your house is unsafe.

Here's the simple version:
- Aluminum wire expands and contracts more than copper
- Over time, that can loosen connections at outlets, switches, and splices
- Loose connections create heat, and heat is what we're trying to avoid

A few homeowner-level clues (no tools, no opening boxes):
- Flickering lights that come and go
- Outlets or switch plates that feel warm
- A faint "hot" smell near a plug or switch
- Breakers that trip more than they used to

All aluminum wiring isn't bad; it's just at the termination point on devices where issues arise. There are ways around it without rewiring your whole house: pigtails with AL-rated splices or AL-rated devices. Most heavy feeder runs to this day are still run in aluminum wiring and are totally acceptable practices.

If your house was built in the late 60s through mid-70s, it's worth knowing what you have.

Question for the neighborhood: Have you ever had aluminum wiring called out on an inspection?

The Mystery of the Breaker That Won’t Stay On

Before assuming the breaker is bad, check a few basics:

- Unplug anything on that circuit that could be causing the trip
- Reset the breaker the right way: push it fully OFF first, then back ON
- If it trips immediately again with everything unplugged, that’s a different problem than an overload
- If it happened right after something was plugged in or switched on, that’s a clue too
- Take a quick look at what was plugged in: damaged cords, bent prongs, or anything that looks cooked

A lot of the time, it’s just the breaker letting you know something else isn’t right.

The Mystery of the Flickering Lights

If a light is flickering, it's most likely something simple. Here's a quick way to narrow it down.

Start here:
1) Is it just ONE bulb? Swap the bulb first.
2) Is it on a dimmer? Some dimmers aren't LED-rated, and some LED bulbs/lights aren't dimmable. Check the bulb or fixture; it should be labeled somewhere.
3) Is it just ONE room? Try a different switch position a few times. A worn switch can act up.
4) If it's a lamp, try a different outlet.
5) If it's a fixture, see if it flickers when big stuff turns on (microwave, vacuum, fridge cycling). That can point to a loose connection or an overloaded circuit.
6) Sometimes it could be a switched outlet, either the switch is becoming worn out, or the outlet could be loose from continuous use.

-Fast strobe or shimmer: usually bulb/dimmer compatibility
-Slow pulse: sometimes a driver in an LED fixture, or something cycling on that circuit
-One quick blink when something starts: normal-ish voltage dip, but it’s a clue about what shares that circuit

If it's multiple lights across the house, or it's getting worse over time, that's a good sign it's worth having someone take a look.

The Mystery of the Dead Outlets! (aka: why random outlets died at once)

I get calls all the time like: My bathroom, outside or garage outlets stopped working.

Often, the GFCI is fine. The problem is that the GFCI protecting those outlets is elsewhere.

Back in the day, it was common to protect multiple downstream outlets with ONE GFCI. So, when it trips, it can look like a bunch of random outlets quit all at once.

Where to check:
- Bathrooms (even the one you never use)
- Garage
- Basement
- Exterior outlets
- Laundry/utility area
- Near your electrical panel (sometimes a GFCI breaker, sometimes an outlet right next to or under the panel)

If it keeps tripping after you reset it, check what was plugged in.

Common culprits:
- Older refrigerators/freezers (garage fridge is a big one)
- Sump pumps
- Shop vacs and power tools
- Air compressors
- Space heaters
- Anything with a motor or heating element

If it trips every time you plug in the same device, that is usually the device (or the cord), not a bad GFCI. Older equipment was not always designed with GFCI protection in mind, so GFCI devices may be more sensitive.

Hope that saves you some headaches, and a couple of bucks!
