The Mechanism and the Woman
Went into the city for a meeting and stopped in front of the clock on display at The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
The plaque calls it the Mystery Lady Timepiece, built in Paris around 1867.
The woman above the clock holds a golden rod connected to a conical pendulum. Instead of swinging from side to side, it turns slowly beneath her hand and regulates the enormous clock below.
The piece works because several disciplines had to come together to complete it. One engineered the mechanism, someone else sculpted the bronze figure, and another supplied the Algerian onyx.
The timing felt almost suspicious.
I have spent most of my career looking for the mechanism underneath the visible thing.
Apparently the Mystery Lady and I have been in the same line of work for 159 years.
