You've been picturing the new kitchen for a year. Here's the part nobody likes to talk about: how you'll pay for it. 💚
Most homeowners don't pick just one option. They mix them: cash for the deposit and early stages, home equity for the larger balance.
The 5 ways to fund a kitchen remodel:
💵 Cash savings — no interest, but don't drain your emergency fund
🏠 Home equity loan — one lump sum; best when the scope and contract are fixed
🔁 HELOC — draw as you go; fits phased work, but rates can change
📄 Cash-out refinance — makes sense if you're refinancing anyway; watch closing costs
💳 Personal loan — unsecured, but higher rates and shorter terms
Before you hand over a deposit in Massachusetts, check that the contract lists:
✅ Full scope, materials and allowances
✅ Who pulls the permits and schedules inspections
✅ How change orders are priced and approved
✅ The milestone that triggers each payment
✅ The contractor's registration number
Under Chapter 142A, payments should follow finished work — demo, rough-in inspections, cabinet install, final walkthrough — and final payment can't be demanded before the job is done.
Planning a kitchen for next spring? This fall is when the financing starts.
