A 5-minute habit to protect your HVAC (and your wallet)
We’re often asked how to keep an HVAC system running like new. Most people think it requires a technician, but there is one DIY "secret" that takes five minutes: keeping your filters clean.
Think of your filter like a dryer lint trap. A clogged filter "suffocates" the equipment, forcing the motor to work twice as hard. This leads to higher electric bills, worn-out parts, and the risk of your coils icing up.
Here is how to handle the two most common systems:
1. Ductless Mini-Splits (Washable Mesh)
These filters are permanent and should be cleaned every two weeks.
- The Process: Power down the unit, lift the front panel, and slide out the mesh filters.
- Cleaning: Vacuum away dust or rinse in the sink with a drop of dish soap.
- Crucial Step: Let them dry completely in the shade before reinstalling. Sun can warp the mesh, and moisture can cause mold.
Finish: Click them back in and reset the "filter" light via your remote.
2. Central Systems (Disposable Pleated Filters)
Furnaces and air handlers use "throw-away" filters. Check these once a month.
- Check the Size: Look at the dimensions on the filter frame (e.g., 16x25x1) before buying a replacement.
- Airflow Direction: Ensure the arrow on the frame points toward the unit, not the ductwork.
- The MERV Trap: Avoid extremely thick "high-efficiency" filters unless your system is rated for them; they can actually restrict airflow and strain your motor.
Pro Tip: If your filters look gray or "fuzzy," they’ve already been restricted for too long. Swapping them regularly keeps the air crisp and the system quiet.
