The less distance water travels through the air, the less opportunity there is for evaporation and wind drift.

Keeping water closer to the ground can help more of it reach the root zone where it’s needed most.

Determining when to stop watering can be just as challenging as deciding when to start watering!

As the season winds down, late-season irrigation scheduling means keeping an eye on several factors, including:

Crop life stage: What stage is the crop in, and how much water does it still need?

Days to maturity: How close is the crop to reaching maturity or harvest?

Weather: What are the upcoming temperatures, rainfall chances, and overall conditions?

Soil moisture: Is there still enough water available in the root zone to support the crop through the remainder of the season?

Soil moisture sensors can help provide that last piece of the puzzle by showing what is happening below the surface. Combining soil moisture data with crop stage, days to maturity, and the weather forecast can help you make an informed decision on when to make that final irrigation application.
