Aurora Lampworks Inc.

Aurora Lampworks Inc. Aurora Lampworks is a lighting restoration, replication and custom fabrication studio in Brooklyn, NY. Over the years, the company has grown.

Aurora has restored, rewired, retrofitted, and UL listed lighting fixtures for individuals, designers and institutions for over 35 years. Aurora Lampworks has been in business serving the architectural, design, and restoration communities for 25 years. The company was started by its founder Dawn Ladd in New Haven, CT, and moved to New York City in 1990. It began as a showroom where antique lightin

g fixtures were restored and offered for sale. Today, we are a team of designers, artisans, craftspeople, conservators, glassmakers, and finishers that produce high quality, made to last lighting fixtures. The restoration of historic lighting fixtures is our highest purpose here at Aurora. We understand that we are fortunate in that we are a company entrusted to conserve those objects that will be available for generations to come. Our scope of work is diverse. In addition to restoration services, we are often called upon to replicate an antique lighting fixture or to create a new design either from an existing fixture, from drawings, or photographs. Regardless of the style or period, our clients count on us to create lighting fixtures that will be around for decades. It is our challenge and pride to undertake these tasks and live up to our reputation by doing the best job we possibly can. Making lighting fixtures meant to last is an important part of a conservation ethic we share, the greenest fixture is one that already exits. Aurora is socially responsible by trying to be as ‘green’ in every aspect of our work lives as possible. We make conscious decisions about the packaging we choose, chemicals we need to use, and encourage staff people to reduce, reuse, and then recycle all the necessary materials we use every day. It is a goal of Aurora’s that although we concentrate on the restoration of historic lighting fixtures, an ethic of conservation prevails through all that we do.

The business of custom lighting does indeed take a village. Aurora relies on a matrix of businesses to help with custom fabrication. Above you will see our friends/colleagues cutting a large piece of slag glass using a saw with a diamond blade. With skill and the right equipment, a hunk of glass can become gem like. Aurora will use the smaller cuts in a custom art work.

Aurora is in the business of restoring lighting fixtures and fixing objects that have broken. But sometimes we have to intentionally break things. Above you will see us breaking up a huge chunk of slag glass. We need smaller pieces to insert into a sculpture as part of a custom art work. The eventually the individual ‘glass gems’ will be lit with fiber optics and will sparkle and show their depth of color variation.
No two days are ever the same at Aurora.

Progress update! The Aurora Archive is coming together. In addition to having lots of cool jig and molds for making lighting fixture components, it will explore the timeline and stories of three iconic New York City lighting installations that were originally designed for gas and evolved to LED. The Archive will also offer some DIY experiences that will help the viewer understand what goes into restoration, preservation, and making objects. People can try their hands (it takes two) at drilling a hole on a 1890s non electric drill press and do some light metal work. It should be very educational and fun.

The G. Moses award is given every year and is the equivalent of the Oscars in the architectual, restoration and preservation community. This year 12 projects were awarded including collection. The award ceremony took place in one of the most magnificent structures,. As the largest gothic structure in North America and the 6th largest church building in the world, it created a most dramatic backdrop for the ceremony. Above you will see director Alex R***r accepting the award. Aurora was very proud to be listed among the many contractors that worked on the many year project.

LEDucation, celebrating its 20th year, is a trade show for the lighting design community featuring over 400 exhibitors and dozens of presenters.
It’s an opportunity for people from all over the country (and even the world) to gather in Midtown Manhattan, to meet each other and share the latest in technology.
As part of this event, continues to host a student design competition. Students are invited to submit their interpretation through light each year’s theme. This year’s theme was “What is Old Again is New Again”.
There were well over 100 submissions and the creativity was mind-blowing! I was honored to be one of the 5 judges. We spent hours discussing the virtues of each piece: its delivery and relevance to the theme. It was a fun and interesting process as our group judged each entry.
Above you will see the many submissions at the beginning of the day and then the crowd that came to learn whose projects were awarded. It was impressive how all the students were supportive of each other. Over all, a great experience for all.

Winter solstice, the longest night of the year was a celebration of both human and animal friends. Charcuterie plates with all kinds of goodies were left out for the critters. Red globes with candles were set out to welcome the longer days to come. If you look closely, you will see the parade of deer that came to feast, with candles lighting their full bellies. It’s good to embrace the magic that darkness bears.
