Today we’re celebrating TBB’s 6th birthday! 🎉

In the past year we’ve grown steadily and intentionally, sharpened our focus, and turned towards building our community. Our current and upcoming projects consume most of our daily bandwidth, but we haven’t lost sight of the bigger picture and just how far we’ve come in the past year. To put that into perspective, here’s a look at what we’ve accomplished:

- Started 3 new projects and closed out 5
- Moved our HQ to Bellingham
- Received Phius certification on our Oak Harbor Passive House project
- Joined other local builders to create a carpenter training program at Bellingham Technical College
- Laid the groundwork for 2 new peer groups with local builders and designers
- Joined the Building Forward Collaborative, a regional peer coaching program
- Hosted a booth at the Biawc Biawc Home & Lifestyle Show
- Opened up our Sixth Street Passive House for the public for the Sustainable Connections Green Home Tours
- Invested in our operations by completing our Standard Operating Procedure
- Invested in our workers by starting an employee development program and strengthening our safety practices

6 years in, we’re proud of what we’ve built and are even more excited for what we’re building next. Thank you to our clients, collaborators, employees, friends, and community for being part of the journey. Here’s to year 7 and many more!

We’d like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who came out to visit us on the Sustainable Connections Green Home Tour! We had a great turnout and were thrilled to share our work with the community.

We had many great conversations, some of which led to the idea of starting a sustainable design group focused on the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profit. There are so many great people and resources in this community, and we’d love to find a way to bring those together. If you’re on the same page, comment “triple bottom line” and we’ll keep you in the loop!

With deteriorating air quality here in Whatcom County, it’s hard not to think about our neighbors on the east side of the Cascades. We’re builders, and it breaks our hearts to see so many homes and livelihoods lost in the Spokane Complex Fires.

For anyone that has the ability to help, we’ve put together a list of resources at the link in our bio. Whether you can donate monetarily or plan to travel east and can bring donated goods, there are plenty of ways to help out.

If you know of any other resources, let us know in the comments and we’ll add those links to the list.

After patiently waiting for our doors and windows to arrive from Poland, we've now installed them in their forever home!

These triple-pane windows are one of the key features on our Sixth Street Passive House, optimized for solar gain and insulation. fenestration trim and mineral wool insulation around the edges round out the installation process, making sure the frame is airtight and well protected.

With a view like this, there’s no such thing as too many decks!

With the roof framing and sheathing complete on the ADU for our Perch House project, it’s time to start rebuilding the deck on the top level that we demoed at the very beginning. Below that, the roof of the ADU will also serve as a deck for the lower level of the main residence, and for good measure, we’re building a small deck on the ADU as well. As this phase begins to wrap up, we’ll be working on sealing the building envelope and adding TimberHP exterior insulation in the weeks ahead.

There’s still some room on the hillside below; should we add another deck?

Big day at our Sixth Street Passive House: our Vetta windows have arrived!

Procuring these triple-pane windows at the right time can be tricky. Between manufacturing, customs delays, and sailing across the Atlantic ocean all the way from Poland, they take months to arrive. The key here is preparation; if we’re off on any measurements or details, simply ordering new window units is out of the question this late in the game.

Stay tuned for our next challenge: installation. And to learn more about this project and why these windows are worth the wait, click the link in our bio.

It's all in the details!

Here's a closer look at our Williams Street deep energy retrofit project after the dust has settled. It's hard to imagine choosing finishes when your home is a construction zone, but sorting out the finer details early on will help keep your project on schedule. Backorders, shipping delays, and supply-chain issues are relatively common, but a little early procurement goes a long way when the final touches start to fall in place.
