Hands-on lab activities are a hugely important part of our Access Biotechnology programming. Recently, students at New Mission High School participated in a lab where they learned about Hypercholesterolemia. This lab, in partnership between MassBioEd and MiniOne, has students use gel electrophoresis to determine which members of a family are heterozygous or homozygous for Familial Hypercholesterolemia. Thank you so much to Frances Kearns, Thomas Lauzon, and our own Sandra Luikenhuis for volunteering their time for a Career Panel at Carver Middle High School this week. Our Careers in Action curriculum is designed for students to analyze real data and role-play as science professionals to determine a possible solution for a real-world problem. We were joined by the amazing 6th grade science team at Stoughton to run our new module: Food Allergies and the Gut Microbiome. Students were highly engaged and participated in robust discussion about food allergies and how that impacts many people in their lives, and were excited to learn about current possible solutions being studied today. Our BioTeach team recently spent a day at Malden High School to help teachers prepare for an upcoming lab. STEM/Biology teacher, Suzanne Brill, had the following to say about the team and the amazing work they do:

“This [curriculum] is so attractive to the kids. They feel like they are being given a challenge. This [program] has been a total game changer. We are so appreciative, and it makes my job easier to get them engaged!”

𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦!

The BioTeach team serves secondary school students and science educators throughout Massachusetts. Through professional development workshops, the team provides the tools and resources needed for science educators to bring innovative science activities to their classrooms. A cornerstone of their work is the ACCESS program, where BioTeach educators work alongside teachers to deliver quality, hands-on science experiences in high-needs school districts.

The work this amazing team does not only strengthens classroom instruction and supports educators; it also empowers students to see themselves as scientists.

Recently, we held a career panel in Stoughton in partnership with their HOSA club as a part of our Access Biotechnology after school programming. We were joined by some amazing volunteer panelists: James Sherley, President and CEO of Asymmetrex, Sedna Darkey, Lead, Quality Control at Alnylam, Shelley Yang, Senior Manager of Scientific Communications at Collegium, and Jennie Martinez, Director of Forecasting and Analytics at Collegium. 25 students were eager to hear the panelists' stories and stayed well beyond the original end timing of the program to ask good questions and engage in fruitful conversations with the speakers.
