Homeowner Tip from MPV Kitchen & Bath 708-REMODEL. Before You Hire Any Contractor...
Every week we see posts in local Facebook groups that begin with..."Never hire this contractor..." By the time those posts appear, the homeowner has often already lost thousands of dollars, been left with unfinished work, or is scrambling to find someone to fix the problem. As a contractor, those stories frustrate us—not because they involve another company, but because many of them may have been preventable with just a little research before hiring.
A recommendation from a friend or a Facebook group is a great place to start your search. It should never be where your search ends. Before you hire anyone, spend five or ten minutes doing some homework.
✅ Google the company. Can you find an established online presence? Without an online presence, you can’t verify the legitimacy of a company. You can’t read reviews for negative patterns, or positive experiences.
✅ Read their reviews. Not just the star rating. Read how they respond when something doesn't go perfectly. Every contractor encounters challenges. The difference is how they handle them.
✅ Look for completed projects. Do they consistently share photos of their work? Can you tell they've completed projects similar to yours?
✅ Verify their business information. Can you easily find a business phone number? A website? A business address? How long have they been operating? Do they have insurance?
And here's something many homeowners don't think about... Facebook recommendations are helpful, but it's often impossible to know the relationship between the person making the recommendation and the contractor. It may be a satisfied customer. It may be a friend, family member, or someone you've never met. Sometimes, it’s a fake account giving a fake recommendation. The point isn't to distrust recommendations or self-promotions—it's to verify them.
Another question worth asking is this: If something goes wrong, who do I call? Every remodeling project has the potential for unexpected issues. Materials arrive damaged. Someone gets sick or has a personal issue. A product is defective. A mistake gets made. These things can happen to any contractor. What matters is whether the company has the experience, organization, and commitment to make it right. Will someone answer the phone? Is there a project manager or office staff available? Does the company have the resources to keep your project moving if something unexpected happens?
Most importantly... Do they stand behind their work? At MPV Kitchen & Bath, we've built our company around one simple philosophy: The job isn't finished until our customer is genuinely satisfied. That means answering the phone, communicating throughout the project, standing behind our workmanship, and resolving problems—not avoiding them. We have excellent reviews and a 5⭐️Star rating on Google and HomeAdvisor/Angi. A+ rated with the Better Business Bureau. Whether you hire us or someone else, we genuinely hope you'll take a few extra minutes to research whoever you invite into your home. It could save you months of frustration, thousands of dollars, and the heartbreak of writing one of those "Never hire..." posts yourself.
We wish everyone the best of luck with their next home improvement project.
