The Many Traditions of Mushrooms
Mushrooms and fungi, long thought to be a temporary mystery of the forest, we now realize have been the engine of the life cycle all along. Today, as the awareness of humanities impact on the planet becomes more and more apparent, the solutions to our vast footprint present themselves in an equally clear way. Mycology, the science of fungi/mushrooms, is one of these solutions. Mycology has recently been referred to as an “under-studied mega-science” who’s involvement in the life cycle is as inseparable as water is from ice. As our understanding of the environment evolves parallel to our ability to choose wisely the direction we will grow as a species, our trajectory through history will be directly linked to the way we manage ourselves in relation to the air we breath, the water we drink , and the soil upon which we sow our seeds. These root elements unify in a sort of trifecta of opportunity for the implementation of Mycology to greatly impact human well being and the well being of the diverse ecosystems that comprise Earth.
Mushrooms have a rich, thousands of years old history, as a medicinal therapy in China, Japan, Africa and Europe. 5000 year old African cave art indicates the esteem for fungi our ancestors maintained. Prior to the inception of the animal kingdom, of which humans are a part, fungi began shaping earths inhospitable environment approximately 1,300 million years ago. Thats some 600 million years BEFORE PLANTS!!! We are certainly in debt to the fungi. Through obsessive observation of the natural world and the pioneering innovations of a wizend few, Mycology finds itself on the prominence among the sciences as potentially the most impactful solution for pollution in the world today.
Fungi possess these following traits (among others):
+the ability to neutralize environmental toxins including but not limited to, hebicides, pesticides, hydrocarbons, f***l coliform bacteria (Round-up, motor oil, E-coli, etc.) from water and soil
