Many larger homes have more than one heating and cooling system. Whether you have separate HVAC systems for different floors, additions, or zones of your home, it's common to have multiple thermostats controlling different areas.

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is setting those thermostats at dramatically different temperatures. While it may seem like a good way to save energy or keep certain areas more comfortable, it can actually make your HVAC systems work harder, increase energy costs, and create comfort issues throughout your home.

Understanding How Multiple HVAC Systems Work
Homes with multiple systems are designed to distribute heating and cooling more effectively across different areas. For example, one system may serve the first floor while another serves the second floor.
Even though these systems operate independently, they still affect the overall temperature and airflow throughout your home. Air naturally moves between floors and rooms through stairwells, hallways, and gaps around doors, causing different areas of the home to influence each other.

The Problem with Different Thermostat Settings
