The Importance of Tuning Your Control Power: A Stable 24.5 VDC Strategy ⚡🔌
In a well-designed controls cabinet, precise input power is non-negotiable. While "24 VDC" is the standard nominal voltage, in complex systems, we often find that "exactly 24.0 V" at the source doesn't always translate to reliability at the devices.
A critical, yet often overlooked step during panel FAT or on-site commissioning is proper power supply output tuning.
At GoGo Consulting 68 LLC, our commissioning process often involves intentionally setting primary power supplies to 24.5 VDC.
Why the extra 0.5 VDC?
Combating Voltage Drop: Every wire, terminal block, and intermediate connection introduces resistance. Over long cable runs or densely loaded panels, a nominal 24V supply can drop significantly by the time it reaches the end devices (PLCs, IO, sensors). Setting 24.5V provides the necessary overhead to ensure all components receive adequate power, preventing subtle brownouts or signal failures.
Mitigating Floating Ground & Noise: Small, fluctuating voltage variances in the field common/grounding system can cause "floating ground" issues. A slightly elevated, stable supply reference helps pull input signals cleanly, reducing the susceptibility to low-level noise that can corrupt sensor data or communication lines.
The GoGo Approach: Simple actions during commissioning—like using a validated multimeter and a precise tuning screwdriver to calibrate and verify these voltage setpoints—can save countless hours of troubleshooting later. We build robust systems that account for real-world electrical behaviors.
Is your current system struggling with intermittent sensor errors or unexplained signal fluctuations? A thorough check of your tuned DC voltage might be the solution.
