I wish I had a hundred jobs like this. I will never take another job like the last one. I really lost my behind and learned a very costly lesson, nearly went out of business before I even got started. Just for the record for any and all of you aspiring business owners, out there take it from me. It takes one maybe two bad decisions consecutively and you will go under. Take your time. watch, learn, and memorize the bidding process. Every detail involved cost money and takes time which is money. A lot of these punch out list jobs on old homes that were not built to code nor did the builder which was probably the home owner know or understand how to crown a wall or to elevate a receptacle up off the ground. Just say no. You can always tear it down and build a new one but 9 times out of ten the home owner is never going to be happy regardless of howmuch extra work is added to an agreement. You can dress up a monkey but odds are they are still gonna jump from limb to limb. My point is that in most situations if the home owner thinks that he or she is saving a ton of money by not completely demoing every room that work is required in, than they probably are, which means that most likely you won't. It's hard to turn down work, especially in the beginning, but knowing when to let it go is crucial for the longevity of your business. This one however was great RIP out the old and replace. better, stronger, prettier, and built well beyond the requirements that any code system requires.
The customer is happy you make some money. It's a good day, but man oh man how it can go the other way so easily.
