It is time to begin to think rationally vice politically about a conversion to renewable generation for the US grid. This challenge is more complex than any politician understands and it requires engineers of many disciplines to apply their skills to answer the challenge. Texas, with its ERCOT independent grid, might just be the right place to start as it operates apart from regional and national constraints. It could be the perfect laboratory to craft a blended solution - one that withstands weather episodes. In an expanse as broad as the US, and considering its variety of prevailing weather patters, regional demand factors, population distribution, etc. etc., it's time we have meaningful discussions about the role of nuclear power, gas generation, renewable generation, behind the meter microgrid integration and energy storage technologies. It is time to dismiss the foolhardy belief the US will be 100% renewable any time soon and get busy with designing and building solutions that solve today's issues and form the foundation for tomorrow's grid.
Another state where unreliable renewable energy leads to power outages.
