New construction homes typically cost about $60,000 more than existing homes, but lower utility bills and reduced maintenance costs can offset much of that gap.
Nationally, buyers of new homes save an average of $25,335 over 10 years compared to buyers of 20-year-old homes, according to a new Realtor.com analysis. New England leads in savings, with Massachusetts buyers saving up to $38,927 over a decade, while Southern states see smaller benefits due to less demanding climates and older building codes.
