You’ve thought about what you want in your home. But what do you want out of your land?

Maybe it’s a big garden, a workshop where you can finally spread out, or a few chickens in the backyard. Maybe it’s a porch overlooking it all with a little room to grow.

It’s easy to focus on the house when you’re planning a build, but the rest of your property deserves that same thought. Where will you spend time outside? What would you like to have space for now? What might you want to add a few years from now?

You don’t have to have it all figured out on day one, but it is worth talking about these ideas early on though. We want to make sure your home fits into the bigger picture of what you want your land to be one day.

Thinking about building in 2027? Reach out today or visit our website to explore our work and tell us about your home and property. Starting the conversation now gives us time to think beyond the house and plan for how you want to use your land, both now and down the road. A well-built home takes time and thoughtful planning, start your conversation today.

ATTENTION

Setter Construction had a trailer of equipment stolen from our job site the evening of 10/15/2026 on Apple Lane in Blacksburg. A police report has been filed, and no arrests have been made at this time.

We’re a local builder, and these tools are what our crews rely on every day to build homes for families right here in the New River Valley. Losing them is a real setback for our team, and it’s frustrating to see that kind of work taken.

The items were primarily Makita, Milwaukee, Paslode, and Bosch tools. Everything we own is marked “Setter Construction” or “SC” in black Sharpie. If you see anything with those markings, or hear anything that might help, please reach out to our team directly (540.750.6778) or contact the Blacksburg Police Department / non-emergency number (540.443.1400). We’d ask that you not approach anyone or attempt to recover anything yourself.

If you can, please share this post. The NRV has always looked out for its own, and the more people who see this, the better the chance these tools find their way back, Thank you.

Back in February, we were on site at this project completing a structural post repair. Making sure the structure underneath was sound, properly supported, and ready for what comes next.

By June, the project had moved into a new phase. We worked alongside Modern Day Roofing to get the metal roof installed.

Now, here in October, the siding is complete.

Looking back across those months, it’s a good example of how a project progresses in stages. Each stage required its own time for planning, and coordination ensuring all of the meticulous details were accounted for.

We’re proud to have been part of this project from structural repair through completed siding, and grateful to Modern Day Roofing for their work on the roof. It’s satisfying to see a project reach this point.

Follow along for more project updates to come.

We had the opportunity to work alongside Goldsmith Design Build on this project, with their team serving as the general contractor.

It was a truly rewarding experience, and we are so glad to have played a part in bringing this vision to life. We are excited to finally share a look at the project as it's coming to completion. We hope you enjoy seeing it as much as we enjoyed working on it.

A piece of timber can look pretty ordinary, until you stop and think about what it took to put it in your hands.

As framers, we work with wood so often that it’s easy to see just another stud, joist or something to measure, cut, fix and move on from.

But before it was building material, it was part of a living tree. The extensive journey wood takes from the forest to our job site, and the dedicated individuals who harvest the timber, mill it, dry it, and transport it so it is ready for our use.

Not to mention everything that brought us here, too. The apprenticeships. The mistakes we learned from. The early starts. The generations before us who passed down their skills so we could make a living doing something we love.

At Setter Constructions, that’s worth remembering.

Respecting timber means more than admiring it. Wood is renewable when forests are responsibly managed, and we can respect that resource through thoughtful sourcing, careful planning and less unnecessary waste.

We’re not just putting frames together. We’re taking something grown by nature, shaped by many hands, and turning it into a place where someone’s life will happen.

That’s a privilege, and a good reason to take pride in every cut, every connection and every frame we stand.

Fall in the New River Valley is the kind of season that makes you want to slow down, take the long way home, and make a day of it.

For those who call the NRV home, and for anyone visiting to see the changing leaves there’s no shortage of ways to experience the season. The Blue Ridge views get brighter, the air gets crisper, and even an ordinary weekend can turn into a memorable adventure.

A few ways to soak it all in:
☐ Take a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway
☐ Spend a day at Sinkland Farms with hayrides and pumpkins
☐ Stop for fresh c***r and donuts at Doe Run Farm
☐ Hike the Cascades surrounded by fall foliage
☐ Spend an evening listening to live music at the Floyd Country Store
☐ Catch a Hokies game in Blacksburg

Whether you’re planning a fall-color getaway or simply looking for a reason to enjoy a weekend close to home, take this as your reminder to get outside, explore a little, and enjoy the beauty right here in our backyard.

What would you add to the ultimate NRV fall bucket list? 🍁

The most important decisions in a custom home are often made before construction ever begins.

There is a stage of the building process that quietly shapes almost everything that follows: pre-construction.

This is where we work through the questions that shape the entire build. How will the home fit the land, site access, utilities, drainage, septic or well considerations, structural and engineering needs, and the many other details that turn a great idea into a buildable plan. With a thoughtful pre-construction process we can identify challenges early, make decisions in the right order, and create a clearer path from vision to finished home.

It is how we protect the investment our clients are making in their land, their home, and the life they envision building there. The visible work of building is exciting. But the careful work that happens beforehand is what helps a project move forward with clarity and confidence.

From blue underlayment to a finished solar roof. Clean ridge lines, and a solar array built right into the shingles. No panels bolted on top, no lag bolts piercing your roof, just a roof that powers your home.

We built the home, and the roofing was handled by Modern Day Roofing, who installed the GAF Energy Solar Roof system. Solar built right into the shingle with high-performance cells that turn sunlight straight into power for the house, connectors concealed but easy to reach if anything ever needs checking, and a lag bolt-free system so going solar doesn't mean poking holes in the roof you just paid for.

Real numbers: a 22 kW system producing an estimated 23,716 kWh in year one, serious production, not a token panel or two. Our thinking is simple: a roof should protect your home and work for you for decades, going solar shouldn't mean trading waterproofing for panels, and this system lets you have both and looks clean doing it.

If you've been thinking about a custom home, or remodeling, we're booking 2027 now. Send us a message, or tag someone who's been talking about building in Southwest Virginia.

📍 Proudly serving the New River Valley, Montgomery, Giles, Pulaski, Craig, Floyd & Wythe counties.
