The BioArt Project for Kids is a core pillar of our interdisciplinary educational programming at Myofrastand Inc.

Through this initiative, we bridge the gap between complex scientific research—specifically neuropathology and genomic landscapes—and creative expression.

Our mission is to democratize science, making high-level medical concepts accessible, engaging, and empathetic for young minds through visual and wearable arts.

Our student reporter, Camila, shares what we explored during the first week of the Summer camp 2026, from understanding how Alzheimer's disease affects the brain to learning about the hippocampus, amyloid plaques, and tau protein tangles.

We also discovered how interactive games and music therapy can bring joy and meaningful connections to people living with Alzheimer's dementia.

But science wasn't our only adventure! Our young BioArtists mixed their own paints, transformed their scientific knowledge into colorful works of art, and began creating the toile that will become their Alzheimer's-inspired fashion designs for our upcoming runway show.

We are so proud of these young scientists and artists for combining curiosity, compassion, creativity, and innovation. We can't wait to see what they create during our second and final week!

Stay tuned for more updates from our BioArt channel and the BioArt Summer Camp 2026! 💙🧬🎨✨

Hello Everyone,

Have you already registered your children for our BioArt Summer Camp? This is far from an ordinary summer camp. Guided by scientist and bioartist Dr. Monica Pessanha, Founder and Director of Research and Experimental Pathology at Myofrastand Inc., participants will explore the fascinating intersection of neuroscience, art, and high fashion in Closter, NJ.🎨

Why this camp is an absolute MUST:
The Mission: This year, our project focuses on Alzheimer’s awareness, translating complex science into beautiful, avant-garde art.

The Runway: Our campers are collaborating on professional-grade canvas fabric toiles that will actually be showcased at New York Fashion Week this September!

Special Highlight: An incredible, heartwarming intergenerational session where campers can invite a grandparent to collaborate on their art piece.

The Details:

Dates: June 29 – July 10 (Monday - Friday)
Time: 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM
Where: 300 High St, Closter, NJ

Cohort Size: Strictly limited to 12 participants for an elite, hands-on mentorship experience.

Week 1 explores the science of the brain, and Week 2 goes full-on runway construction! Don’t let your child miss out on a chance to be a part of fashion week history while learning cutting-edge science.

At the Global Health Innovation Summit - 2026, Dr. Pessanha emphasized that APOE4 should be understood as a genetic susceptibility factor rather than a deterministic gene. Carrying APOE4 increases the probability of developing Alzheimer’s disease, but it does not define an individual’s outcome.

Importantly, she highlighted the distinction between late-onset and early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. While late-onset Alzheimer’s is influenced by risk genes such as APOE4, early-onset familial Alzheimer’s is typically driven by rare, deterministic mutations in genes such as APP, PSEN1, and PSEN2, which are strongly associated with disease development at a younger age.

This perspective reinforces the importance of prevention and personalized approaches, including lifestyle interventions such as cardiovascular health, nutrition, and physical activity. It also underscores that Alzheimer’s disease is not a uniform condition, but a complex spectrum with diverse biological mechanisms and clinical trajectories.

At the Global Health Innovation Summit- 2026, Dr. Bishopric explored the dual nature of the APOE ε4 variant. While known today as a risk factor for Alzheimer’s, it was originally a survival tool—providing immune resistance to infectious agents in tropical environments like Brazil.

This "survival game" is written in the Brazilian genome (Nunes et al., 2025):
🔹 Paternal Lineage: ~71% European
🔹 Maternal Lineage (mtDNA): ~42% African | ~35% Indigenous

This data reflects a complex history and highlights a critical gap: nearly 9 million genetic variants in Brazil remain unrecorded in global databases. To truly understand Alzheimer’s for everyone, we must prioritize genomic equity and include neglected African and Indigenous lineages.

Innovation thrives when science is inclusive. 🔬🌎
