Earth Design Consultants, Inc.

Earth Design Consultants, Inc. We are a small corporation based in Oregon that performs contract ecological research. We solve real-world problems in wetland and watershed management.

Earth Design Consultants, Inc. (EDC), an Oregon corporation, was founded in 1996 by scientists specializing in ecological assessments and conservation planning. EDC is known for its application of geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing tools to solve natural resource management issues around North America, with a particular focus in the Pacific Northwest. Drawing from a large group

of highly respected collaborators, we build multidisciplinary teams uniquely suited to the specific needs of individual projects. We have a strong track record of successfully completing projects on or before the given deadline, and pride ourselves on our ability to work closely with clients to ensure that our research and products meet their desires and expectations.

Earth Design Consultants, Inc. has just completed a two-year pilot project for the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. This project developed a series of spatial models that linked Tribal Members with valued natural resources using Traditional Ecological Knowledge. We are happy to report that this project will be expanding to a larger area during 2022-2024. These analyses are being used by Tribal Members to support their ongoing management decisions.

Earth Design Consultants, Inc. is extremely pleased to be starting a project working with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians during the next two years. We will be building spatial databases and spatial models that link Tribal Members with natural and cultural resources. We will be considering both past and present use in applying their Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

EDC, Inc. scientists will be heading to South Slough NERR next week to determine if eelgrass beds can accurately be mapped using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Sensors that we have used in the past have had sufficient spectral resolution but were expensive and had spatial resolution of 1 to 2 meters. Controlling the timing of acquisition and the spatial resolution of UAV imagery is pretty good but the spectral resolution (color and IR) is limited. We are interested if we can develop a method that takes advantage of the positive attributes of UAVs.

EDC, Inc. is in the field this week completing the field component of a study on the St. Louis River Freshwater Estuary near Duluth, MN. We are collecting physical and biological information from a number of different types of shallow bays in MN and WI. This information will be used by the MN LandTrust to help set quantitative restoration targets for some of their wetland/ fish habitat restoration projects.

Drs. Schooler and Garono work sample Perch Lake to collect data that will be used to help develop a restoration plan. They found areas of low oxygen concentration (orange and yellow dots on the map). Low oxygen concentrations can stress aquatic organisms. This work is sponsored by the Minnesota Land Trust.
