A Lifetime of Residential Construction

Since before I started kindergarten, I went to work building and remodeling houses with my papa. Every summer, my brother and I would get up and go to our grandparent's house, have some breakfast, and load up with papa and head to the job site. That bench seat always had a protective cloth cover.

We loved the stops at the gas station and lumber yard on our way to work. Papa would always get us some sort of snack and/or drink while filling up his pickup truck. I remember how he would rub his fingers together while holding the steering wheel. I think it was just a habit, maybe from getting rid of caulking that had been on his fingers?

During our younger years, we didn’t know much about the technical details of the construction trade. We helped however we could, by bringing materials and tools. Mostly, we played with the scrap pieces and built little houses for our Hot Wheels town. As we grew up, we learned how to read a tape, cut material, structure layout, drive nails, and erect structures. From there, we learned how to read blueprints, deck and install shingles on a roof, install windows, siding, install insulation and drywall.

Eventually I graduated high school and went off to college. During my third year of college, I decided to join the United States Air Force, in the Civil Engineer Squadron, where I learned more about commercial and residential construction. I went back to college to study Construction Management with an emphasis in residential construction. From there, I worked for a high-end residential remodeling company, then transitioned to become a builder with a large new home builder in Dallas, TX.
