Last weekend, two notable earthquakes were recorded ~20 miles north-northwest of Carlsbad, New Mexico (M4.0 on Friday, February 23rd and M3.9 on Saturday, February 24th). Based on the New Mexico Oil Conservation Division’s Seismicity Response Protocol, these events are expected to trigger new injection restrictions and monitoring/reporting requirements around the earthquake epicenters. Most notably is cessation of water injection within 3 miles of the seismic events, a 50% reduction in injection rate between 3 and 6 miles from the events, and a 25% rate reduction between 6 and 10 miles. While not yet officially released, B3 expects the boundaries noted to roughly conform with those of the “Notional Updated Restriction Area” shape shown in the map image below.

Subsurface water chemistry plays a crucial role in energy development and carbon management, including the production of petroleum resources, the extraction of minerals for battery-based energy storage, and the opportunities for geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide. The water’s chemistry is defined and dictated by temperature, pressure, and type and concentration of dissolved constituents, all of which can vary significantly with location and time. B3's Aqueous Geochemistry Data Module supports optimal decisions for how water can be used, re-used, disposed of, and best protected. Merging data from multiple sources, leveraging rigorous QA/QC protocols, and applying a consistent characterization of sample collection, preservation, and analysis gives users unparalleled access and insight into the composition of groundwater water across the United States.

On the evening of February 2nd, Oklahoma experienced a 5.1 magnitude (M) earthquake approximately 40 miles due east of Oklahoma City. This seismic event occurred within one-quarter mile of a 5.7 M earthquake in November of 2011. While Oklahoma has a recent history of increased frequency and magnitude of earthquakes associated with underground disposal of oilfield produced water, actions taken by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to reduce disposal in areas of elevated seismic risk have led to a dramatic reduction in events back to near background levels. While Friday’s 5.1 M earthquake does not immediately seem to be part of a trend of increasing seismic activity, it is a reminder that continued vigilance and smart water management is a necessity for safe, secure, effective, and environmentally responsible underground fluid disposal.

In the wake of recent seismic events in the Permian Basin, this , we highlight the increasing importance of accurately assessing and managing formation pressure for the safe disposal of produced water underground. In response to these challenges, B3 Insight is proud to offer SIP (Subsurface Interval Pressure), a machine learning model designed to deliver algorithmically derived formation pressure data and maps.

Our innovative SIP model estimates two types of formation pressure—pseudostatic and dynamic (as pictured below)—enabling the calculation of subsurface pressure gradients across the entire basin. This helps geoscientists and engineers effectively visualize the downhole pressure impact of thousands of SWDs over time.

Water is life, and it’s also local. In 2023, for the first time ever, we estimate that over half of all water used in horizontal completions in the Permian Basin was sourced from recycled produced water! The shift in water usage is helping operators to preserve groundwater resources and reduce produced water injection.

On this , our CEO, Kelly Bennett, dives into this transformative journey and how oil and gas is at the forefront of a major industrial water stewardship revolution.

Roughly 60% of Permian Basin oilfield produced water disposed underground since 2010 has been injected into “shallow” zones in the Delaware and Midland Sub-Basins, zones that are situated above the primary unconventional oil- and gas-producing formations. Over that time, injection rates have changed considerably, particularly in the Delaware Sub-Basin, where the median yearly volume injected per well has increased more than ten-fold, from 0.2 million barrels in 2010 to 2.2 million barrels in 2023 (projected).
