A strange humming noise turned into a bigger plumbing issue 🔧

A customer called because they were hearing a loud humming noise from the basement, especially while using the washing machine or shower.

At first everything was quiet, so I started checking the system while they operated different fixtures upstairs.

During the inspection, I found the expansion tank was waterlogged and no longer functioning properly. Then the humming started—and I was able to trace the noise to the home’s pressure-reducing valve.

Next step: check the incoming water pressure.

The house pressure was roughly DOUBLE the recommended operating range.

I attempted to adjust the PRV, but it would no longer bring the pressure down where it needed to be.

The solution was replacing the failed expansion tank and PRV, then adjusting and verifying the home’s water pressure back within a normal operating range.

Sometimes the noise is only the symptom. Finding the cause is the important part. 🔧

🚪 Sometimes a frustrating home repair has a surprisingly simple solution.

This door wasn’t opening and closing correctly, and the problem became clear once I started diagnosing it.

The hinge screws were no longer holding properly in the existing holes, allowing the hinge and door alignment to move.

Instead of replacing parts that didn’t need replacing, I repaired the existing mounting points, secured the hinge properly and adjusted the door.

The result?

✅ Door opens freely
✅ Door closes properly
✅ Existing hardware retained
✅ Problem solved without an unnecessary replacement

Good handyman work isn’t just replacing things—it’s figuring out why something isn’t working and fixing the actual problem.

What’s the one repair around your house you’d most like to finally cross off the list?

🛠️ Sometimes what looks like a simple exterior repair turns into something much more once you open it up.

This garage repair revealed significant wood deterioration around the door openings that needed to be addressed before everything could be put back together properly.

The affected areas were opened up, deteriorated material removed, damaged framing rebuilt, and the exterior closed back in to leave the homeowner with a solid foundation for the next step.

My portion of the project was the repair and rebuild. The homeowner plans to handle the painting herself and may add picture-frame trim around the garage doors later.

That’s something I’m happy to work with—sometimes a homeowner wants the complete finished project, and sometimes they just need help getting the difficult repair work done so they can take it from there.

🏠 Sometimes it’s not one big repair—it’s a couple of smaller things around the house that need attention.

On this visit, I took care of two exterior maintenance items for the homeowner:

🔧 Insulated an exposed plumbing line to give it some added protection.

🏡 Reset and secured a shutter that had pulled away from the side of the home.

Neither required a major renovation—just the right repair to get things back where they needed to be.

That’s a big part of what I do with The Traveling Fixer: helping homeowners knock out those repair and maintenance items that keep piling up.
