Much of the discussion around plastic recycling ignores the economics of plastic resin pricing. That's unfortunate because the bottom-of-the-barrel pricing is what kills most plastic recycling. With resin prices in the basement, why would a manufacturer take the risk of using recycled plastic when they can buy brand new plastic feedstock? Until the economics are addressed, plastic recycling will continue in the doldrums.

Prices for PET bales are under 10 cents per pound. This price does not even pay for the fuel to pick up the material. Do you think at this price companies will make efforts to collect more PET? McKinsey's report ignores the fundamental economics of recycling and repeats the plastic industry talking points. Very disappointing.

Using plastic waste in road construction is not a good idea. No improvements to the road, and now you are putting chemicals and other hazardous materials under your neighborhood roads. And of course, it’s the same old story: “First, project developers tend to be fussy with the plastic they use: If they’re going to incorporate it into infrastructure, it usually has to be clean and high-quality polyethylene, not just whatever scraps of mixed plastic waste can be scraped from the bottom of consumers’ recycling bins.”
