Paid PhD opportunity – Chemical/Materials Engineer
University of Liverpool > Electrocatalyst manufacturing & testing techniques. (Hydrogen Fuel Cells)
Study electrocatalysts and become a renowned expert in the bustling field of renewable energy.
About the project:
A recent development by the collaborative company has given reason to the investigation of new oxide-based anodic (hydrogen oxidation) and cathodic (oxygen reduction) catalysts, reducing the use of platinum group metals (PGMs) to further improve the sustainability of the technology.
This project will investigate state-of-the-art electrocatalysts for alkaline fuel cells, including chemical composition, catalyst loading amount, support and synthesis methods for both cathode and anode. Commercial benchmark catalysts will be used as reference to screen high-performance catalysts of new composition, structure and superior electroactivity by using standard gas diffusion electrode and ion exchange membrane. Catalyst synthesis route will be developed that meets the requirement of low-cost and scalability. Catalysts will be first evaluated in electrochemistry lab at MIF and then under practical operating conditions through collaboration with industrial partner.
