Test etch with rough grinds on some wanna be Wootz.

Got a mega warp and had to throw some rough grinds on while getting the blade straight. Figured I’d etch and see if there is any carbide pattern at all.

The mix is darker than expected, if I can see some pattern in this stage. You know it’s going to be pop with actual proper grinds and a good sanding!

More swords than normal for me. Had fun with a AI song and mash up of ones I worked on this year.

Between the ones for me and the growing of list buds requesting quotes. All next year could be just bigger blades if I accepted…not a terrible idea as I have a lot more fun with these vs twinky knifes.

Previous moasic run isn’t enough steel to make a Gladius. Ean Forge’s idea for the moasic version really caught my attention. So I’ll have a moasic plus a crucible steel version but this amount of steel should work 😎

Another one of those on and off projects, will take me some time to complete it. Don’t wanna be one of those rush rush shortcut ding dongs.

Quality over quantity everyday!!

Prefect weather for forging!

I tried to make this out of pattern steel 2 years ago, didn’t have enough material. Tried to make the sword again and now I got too much!!!!

Crucible steel Gladius!!

Welp, I think I need to invest in a flattening hammer. A quad bevel of that length is whooping me. Got me nervous on making a mark I cannot get out.

Great time to check the profile and there is enough here to make the same blade plus a little longer.

My wife says every inch matters 😭😭

I’m continuously asked will I go full time, and my answer is NEVER!!

It is a luxury to be able to work on what I feel like with no obligations. Example, felt froggy and wanted to put a mean hollow on this Bowie!

Full-time smiths that put in the work, Mad Respect!!

But I usually see other makers struggling. To the point they take shortcuts on quality, craftsmanship and even start outsourcing their work to survive. Buying blanks, patterns, minor forging on them if at all just to call it hand forged. Purchased guards, pommels and even the sheathe work on simple stuff.. but advertises it’s all them!

Guess I noticed how the passion depleted, it’s just a means to try and make some cash. Perhaps thats some peoples thing, and that’s ok. It just looks miserable to me and I would rather continue to learn and grow.

Mid Sept marks 6yrs into this rabbit hole.

A memory of my Gladius showed up, this was the 2nd sword I ever tried. Finished it right before my 3rd year and I was proud!

I got more exp and some big boy toys. Makes me wonder what it would look if I made another.

Could be silly and go big, a more advance patterned steel or maybe use crucible #6!
