Hail and wind damaged roofing can lead to serious structural damage to your home. Hail can cause dents and cracks in your roof, while wind can cause shingles to be torn off or lifted up. This can lead to water damage, leaks, and even mold growth. Additionally, hail and wind damaged roofing can also lead to higher energy bills due to decreased insulation.

What’s the purpose of a granulated surface on a shingle? Basically, it increases ruggedness against water, ice, snow and climate. It will absorb the sun’s energy more effectively during the day, and shed it at night, keeping your home at your desired temperature. So what happens when your shingles start to lose their granules? Granule loss is the leading instigator of roof replacements, as it’s the heaviest and most prevalent symptom of a very aged roof.
However, other things can cause this too, such as tremendous rains, hail, branches, strong wind storms, and exceptionally intense hot and sunny days.
The biggest tell will be in your gutters, where the granules will accumulate. The flow of water through gutters rarely moves them at much speed, so they tend to gather up and even clog gutters. Plus looking at your roof you can see which shingles have lost their granules, as they will be black, and look more like a uniform surface, compared to the lighter, visibly granulated shingles around them. Once your shingles start losing their granules, that area of your roof is now a weak point for issues such as leaks.
