Oil Myth #3: The brand is what protects your engine.

It's not. The specification is.

The API rating on the back of that bottle — API SP, ILSAC GF-6, GM dexos1 — that's the standard the oil has been certified against. Those specs require real testing. Pass the test, earn the rating.

If two oils carry the same spec and the same viscosity, they protect your engine the same way. The brand on the front label doesn't change that.

Where brand loyalty actually costs you: when people overpay for a name and ignore whether the oil even meets the spec their engine requires. That's the part that matters.

Check your owner's manual. Find the required spec. Then buy the oil that meets it — at whatever price point makes sense for you.

Oil Myth #2: Thicker oil is better for your engine.

It's not — and here's why.

Your engine was built with exact tolerances. Oil passages, bearing clearances, everything designed around a specific viscosity. Run oil that's too thick and it won't flow fast enough when you first start your engine cold. Cold starts are where most engine wear happens — and thick oil makes that worse, not better.

On top of that, your engine burns more energy pushing heavy oil through tight passages. That shows up as more heat, more friction, and worse gas mileage.

Modern engines are spec'd for thinner oils — 0W-20, 5W-20 — because the engineering demands it. That's not cheap oil. That's the right oil.

Your owner's manual has the answer. Use it.

Oil Myth #4 All API licensed oils are not exactly the same.

API sets the minimum standard. The base oil, additive package, and OEM approvals can still vary a lot.

The badge matters, but the spec sheet tells the real story.

Quick one for you — the "W" in 5W-30 doesn't stand for Weight. It stands for Winter.

That number before the W (5, 0, 10) tells you how your oil flows in cold temperatures — specifically how fast it moves when you first fire up your engine. Cold starts are where most engine wear happens, and this number matters more than most people realize.

The number after the W (30, 40, 50) is your viscosity at full operating temperature.

Two different ratings. Two different jobs. Both matter.

Most people pick oil by weight and never think twice about it. Now you know what you're actually reading on that bottle.

More oil myths coming — follow along so you don't miss them.

Oil myths don’t just confuse people… they cost people money and equipment life.

In Part 2, we’re breaking down two more big ones:

• Does brand really matter more than specification?
• Are all API oils actually the same?

Here’s the truth: your engine doesn’t care about the label — it cares about what’s inside and whether it meets the right standards.

If you want straight answers without the marketing spin, you’re in the right place.

Like and follow for more myth breakdowns.

Oil myths are everywhere — and a lot of them have been floating around for decades.

In Part 1 of this series, we’re tackling two big ones:

• The “W” in motor oil
• The idea that thicker oil protects better

Modern engines are engineered with tight tolerances and specific oil flow requirements. Using the correct viscosity matters more than most people realize.

In this series, I’m breaking down common oil myths with real-world explanations — no marketing spin, just straight answers.

If you appreciate myth breakdowns like this, like and follow for Part 2.

Ever wonder where your oil actually comes from? 👀

Not a mystery over here!
We blend it.
We bottle it.
We ship it.

No outsourcing. No guessing.
Just real oil, made by the people who designed it.

🇺🇸 Thank You, Veterans 🇺🇸
Today I honor all who’ve served — and especially my two grandfathers, who both saw active duty in World War II. I was fortunate to know them and learn from their courage and sacrifice.

We owe our freedom to heroes like them. 🙏
