⚠️ Weather Alert: Ice Storm & Heat Pump Safety ⚠️

During ice storms and freezing rain, heat pump outdoor units can experience ice buildup on the fan and coil. A light layer of frost on the coil is normal, but heavy buildup on the top or protruding from the sides of the unit is not. When this happens, your system may struggle to heat properly and can even risk damage if it continues to run.

What’s happening?
Ice can prevent the outdoor fan from spinning and block airflow, reducing efficiency and stressing the system.

What we recommend:
If you notice heavy ice buildup on your heat pump:
✅ Switch your thermostat to Emergency Heat
❌ Do NOT try to chip or melt ice manually
🚫 Do not pour hot water on the unit

Emergency Heat bypasses the outdoor unit and uses the backup heat source to keep your home warm while protecting your system during severe weather.

Once conditions improve and the ice has melted, you can safely switch your thermostat back to normal heating mode.
